After the publication of this story, Hyun was arrested and tortured by the Joint Investigation Headquarters and his short story collection Sun-i Samch’on, containing the title story, was banned.

Since Samch’on suffered severe psychological trauma in 1949 when the village was torched, the mere sight of a soldier or police officer from a distance would frighten her enough to make her take a long detour, and this symptom of her nervous breakdown was well known to some of the locals.
