Google:

Hooks assumed her pseudonym, the name of her great-grandmother, to honour female legacies; she preferred to spell it in all lowercase letters to focus attention on her message rather than herself.

Oh! I thought the lowercase “bell hooks” was a typo, but it’s not!

I wasn’t expecting this book to start talking about vegetarianism in relation to masculinity. Wow.

Letting go of a “free labor=women”? I don’t think capitalism allows that.

^ calling themselves “ore” sounds childish and coarse.
And since I’ve got boyfriends who call themselves “watashi” “Atashi” “Uchi” (and most other guys in my life call themselves “boku”) this oversimplification bothers me.
….but, come to think of it, my guy friends are not the “masculine” type…

I do agree with what he’s saying in here, but it feels like things are over simplified.

I’ve always felt frustrated about how some nouns have male role as a default: King=王 Queen =女王(woman king) etc.

And this groping thing in the trains.
One of my best friends is a guy, and he says that he’s fallen victim to groping too, but couldn’t say anything since he’s a guy and “men don’t become victims to groping”.

This Shiori Ito’s case hurts.
I had friends (women) saying that Ito is just saying those things to get attention or things like she shouldn’t make a huge fuss about it since it’s not a big deal….. and we’re all around the same age!!!

^
My bestie got a divorce, so thank god she didn’t have to change all her names back to her maiden name. But it seems like her ex husband might still be using her family name even after their divorce….

Hmmmm….. changing guy’s last name to match his wife’s sounds complicated, but I’m guessing in this particular couple’s case, that’s mostly because his wife is not Japanese.
My childhood friend’s husband changes HIS name to match my friend’s last name, and I don’t think it was THAT difficult.
I must ask my friend about it.

It’s interesting to read about the author’s life since it seems like we’re the exact same age. And we’ve been through similar life changes.
However, his writing style is too much like an “essay submitted as a school assignment” and it’s…. Kinda boring.
