Partition through the eyes of a 14 year old girl

Another novel about a period of history I know nothing about, which is informative and interesting. However, on every single page, there are words relating to Indian culture, customs, dress, that I am unfamiliar with and so I'm continuously looking things up which really disrupts the flow of the story. I want to learn, but footnotes would have been really helpful.
