Today I learned that there are many different interpretations of medieval English. Reading them they are quite different. This confused me but also fascinated me how words can be lost in translation.

Today in my reading I found examples of Ethos Pathos, and Logos. An example of Pathos was when it talked about the nursery rhyme "ashes ashes we all fall down".Then I saw an example of Ethos on page 126 where it talks about the importance of studying how society came over the bubonic plague. Finally, an example of Logos is where they were talking about scientists researching about trying to find vaccines for birdflu

Today while I was reading I learned that the Black Death is still with us today even though we have antibiotics for it. In some places they don't have immediate access to antibiotics if any and it occurs more like an epidemic potentially killing hundreds.

Today I learned that so many peasants died from the plague that there wasn't enough peasants for the work that needed to be done. So peasants were playing the system and charging land owners more money overtime causing the social classes to be brought closer together. Until this was ended by the king of England. He waged a tax on the peasants causing them to revolt and kill a government official.

Today I learned that the King of England thought the black death was God punishing us for being sinful. So he would tell his people to fast on Fridays and walk barefoot to church on Sunday.

Today I learned that the Jews were persecuted during the medieval times and throughout the plague years. I learned that they were blamed for bad luck and bad weather. They were also expelled from England in 1290 and expelled from France in 1322.

Today I learned that in 1348 they used to cut open your vein if you had the bubonic plague. They did this because they believed that it would fix the imbalance.

I have to be in a certain mood to read this book. I just read how the plague wiped out every single person in Greenland. I can't imagine the terror these people felt. John of Redding wrote this "A remarkable thing was noticed for the first time: that everyone born after the pestilence had two fewer teeth than people had had before." Interesting.

Unbelievable what these people went through with this plague. Listen to this: "People in Constantinople took to wearing name tags when they went out. That way, if they dropped dead in the streets, their bodies could be identified." What a fearful time for all.
