I really wish for all professionals and clinicians working with autistic people to read this! Indeed, framing the autistic experience (and the assessment procedure) in a neuro-affirming way would save so many people from a life of thinking that there is something fundamentally wrong with them. And I am GRIEVING that the ADHD equivalent of this book doesn't exist. That ADHD still has "deficit" in its name...

I for sure can say that I learned plenty of new things about the history of autism. So far, the book answered my question of why autism is so much more stigmatised than other "disorders." The neuro-affirming perspective from which the book is written is suuuuch a fresh breath. The writing is so rigorous that there are so many details. Everything is thought out in depth.

Sadly, a lot of this is goal- and theory-driven. Our society is not yet at the point where neurotypical and neurodivergent people learn to interact effectively with each other on a daily basis. There is too much bullying, too much stigma, and barriers in medical research and literature. Even the DSM 5 and other diagnostic books are deficit-based.

This book is written as if the audience is neurotypical.
