“How do you know what something is about?” asks Nina. “When I’m in the middle of writing something, I often have no idea what it’s about.”
“Then wait till the end. If your piece is complete, it will be about something, and it is never about what happens in it, never about its plot.”
Aye. Therein lies the joy of reading good writing. What isn’t said but screams from the page (and people).

I finished my reread last night. This remains a 5-star, beloved book, though I definitely don't agree with everything in the book. But I understand where Rosenblatt is coming from, and why he believes his convictions. I can disagree with him and still love this book, and I do. <3

"You need to be as careful with what you say as a teacher as you are as a writer -- maybe more careful, because as soon as you go public with your words, your students will blow them about like rumors. What I teach my students about writing may become writing. I try not to overthink this, because the burden of competence is daunting." (pg 66)
This is a reread for me, and I love it just as much as I did 9 years ago.
