the tone of this book perplexes me

you cannot namedrop pop culture in a book and then give me a specific year the story is set in and have those two things be incongruous why are the characters getting inspo from princess mononoke but the very next paragraph you tell me its 1996 and three chapters ago they were playing metal gear solid helppp

i think i like this more than one last stop so far which is crazy cause the premise one last stop is the exact sort of thing i love but the premise of this is normally not something i wouldve picked up if it wasnt by an author i already loved

i remember when this book came out that it didnt get a great reception from fans cause people thought it was super boring and dragged and im genuinely surprised bc im basically at the halfway mark and i feel like it flew by lol

i bought this book like four years ago i distinctly remember bc it was part of the huge batch of books i bought that january while i was working at b&n with the combined power of my christmas money & employee discount. in those four years i dont normally vibe with ya fantasy anymore. which is why i kept putting read this one off. but i just liked dragonfruit so we'll see how this goes
