Oh, apparently it's been a week, not two days 🤣 but I'm pretty sure my last point still stands!

This book is completely extra and absolutely ridiculous, but I'm having fun with it and am totally willing to suspend some disbelief and just go along for the ride... buuuuuuuuut putting makeup over a 2-day-old bullet wound? Idk I've never had one. It just seems like it might take a *little* longer to be ready for that, though 😳🤣🤷‍♀️

I love so very, very many things about this book so far, and the complete absence of drama from Aiden is absolutely one of those things 🥰 There's a reason I usually avoid the brother's best friend trope, and I couldn't be happier that this author hasn't leaned into that reason at all.

I'll always be a sucker for the non-human MC who's clueless about human society (which is why I've reread Angel Martinez's A Christmas Cactus for the General so many times, but I digress...) Ellie is absolutely adorable, & I'm right there with Felix irt being completely pissed off at the way he's been taught to see himself as broken. (And by pissed off, I ofc mean I'm here for ALL the delicious hurt/comfort vibes!)

How to fill 500+ pages: tell the story. Flip POVs and retell what just happened, often verbatim, all over again. Then move ahead with the plot- haha, just kidding! Let's cover the same ground AGAIN before we go on. Maybe bring in a side character to whom one of the MCs can rehash every event that was just covered (and then repeated) in the last two chapters, with almost identical language. Rinse & repeat & repeat...

Despite the massively traumatic backstory/worldbuilding, despite the awkward writing voice, I was really into this one. But ngl... my commitment is weakening the lomger Eliano keeps his silence about everything that happened on the mainland. So far, that just feels COMPLETELY contrived, given how he feels about Salt. (Even accounting for the I-won't-spoil-it person whose wishes Eliano is respecting.) #notahappyreader

Salt really is an asshole and would be so easy to dislike, but IMHO the author has written him well - despite the ongoing awkwardness of the non-native-English cadence to the storytelling - and while my heart goes out to Eliano for having to put up with Salt's abrasiveness and the cruel ignorance of some of his comments, I don't hate Salt for it and am definitely rooting for the two of them!

Coercion and abuse... this "medical exam" is pissing me off, which I suppose means kudos to the author as that's the whole point. Prisoners really have no rights, but I suppose in the context of this story, at least Salt has Eliano.

I'm loving the surprise illustrations!!
