Yes gang, I am STILL going

Approx 92,000 words in and I’ve got 2600 highlights flagging ‘telling not showing’, excessively repeated words/phrases, sentences that either don’t mean anything or are just a rephrase of the previous sentence, flow/clarity/word choice issues and typos/incorrect grammar. At this point I am so close to a DNF but I’ve never done that in my life being the annoying completionist that I am

307 pages just to get to the first major event 😭

This one is making me sad, so many interesting concepts drowned in some of the worst editing I’ve ever seen. How can a paid editor miss words or phrases being repeated quite literally hundreds of times?

I have a LOT of thoughts about this one

Hi all! I’m usually more of a quiet lurker on here, liking your reviews and funny updates. But there’s no better place to share my excitement in earning a certificate in book editing by none other than the Managing Editor of Bloomsbury publishing! And because I finished in the top 10% of the class, I got a personalised recommendation letter from him 🥹 one step closer to my editing dreams 💗

This is definitely an easier read than book one so far, which is good. But it is still SO hard to keep up with characters

Palate cleanse time after that heavy ass book I just finished

This is the second series from Anthony Ryan I’ve read and I’m starting to think his writing just isn’t for me. There are random bursts of formal, almost academic writing that make it read more like a textbook than a story

Update - I WAS WRONG! I’ve really enjoyed this one, an easy read with equal measures of whimsy and darkness

Reviewing this one is going to be hard because it’s been… fine? Easy to read? But it just hasn’t made me feel ANYTHING

Like the first book, easy enough to read but my god the main characters are dickheads 🙃 plus if I have to read about feelings ‘climbing up her spine’ one more time I might throw the book across the room

Oh this is so cosy! I can tell this won’t take me long.

So I was pulled an all-nighter until 6am reading this because I couldn’t sleep 🤣 I’m enjoying aspects of it but the writing style is a bit of a slog sometimes. The descriptions are so convoluted it ends up making LESS sense.

I’m trying so hard not to compare to Harry Potter, but the chalice was basically just the goblet of fire 😭 I am loving the tarot magical system but have to say the author’s descriptive writing is a bit clunky so far. Y’know when you have to read a paragraph multiple times over to figure out what they’re trying to say? To form the image in your head? But intriguing so far
