I created a taking-my-time shelf for books that are either very long, very hard to read, or just in general I won't be able to get through in a reasonable time. I'm moving this one to 'currently reading' because I am sorta invested and will probably take less time to read it than I initially expected. I am proving to myself I earned that russian diploma!

Almost there! What a beast of a novel.

Unimaginable human suffering... which makes the brief moments of light in the book shine that much brighter. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget the gas chamber sequence.

The building of the concentration camp being described with such mechanical terms and with living human beings referred to as "organic matter" which travels through them like through a conveyor belt was perhaps the most unsettling 2 pages of the book.

Sometimes I aks myself why I decided to pursue a college degree in a language I didn't speak a word of and then I read a russian book and I'm like oh yeah. That's why.

Done with part 1! So far my favourite character is Katya, the 18 year old radio operator in Stalingrad.

While in the US, I ordered myself some russian books from a bookstore in Brooklyn (which had to be shipped there from Moscow, but anyhow). I've read this in translation before, and I finally gained the courage to try to read something in russian. Gotta admit, some paragraphs, I have no idea what's happening. Others, I think my russian degree might have been deserved.

I'm enjoying it so far, if enjoying is the right word for it. Given that War and Peace might be my all time favourite book, and this book is compared to it a lot, I can say that the comparisons are apt. I hope I can get to page 400 in the next few days.

Наконец, длинная русская классика... I've come back to my roots. Considering I've been saying I'll go back to do a master's in russian (please someone talk me out of that), an apt read.

I love how this ties in with the previous books. For once, some sequels that actually add something to the story!

So far it seems that Robbie and Oscar's lives were so linked their stories kind of merge... there was not really all that much to write about Ross that did not include Wilde. I suppose this changes after Oscar's death.

I have conflicting thoughts on this. I love the lore it adds to the original trilogy but I can't help but to think it's a bit childishly written? I'll make up my mind by the end.

Downloaded this on my ereader so I can read while the better half is asleep, plus, if I wanna be all caught up for the sunrise on the reaping movie I gotta be fast!

Nobody does it like James Baldwin. The last book I bought at St. Innie's during my time at St. Mary's, it makes me so nostalgic :')

I was supposed to read this back in freshman year russian romanticism class but never got around to it. I loved Gogol's short stories (if you like Kafka you'll love them too) but this is an entirely different beast. Reminds a bit of Puškin's Poltava or The Captain's Daughter. I'm not super into these kinds of stories but I guess it's worth the read just to get a better idea of the author's body of work.

Reading this in slovene translation, got this book for free at the LGBT film fest and it's been sitting on my shelf for far too long. This summer I'm doing a kind of physical tbr purge, so this was first on the list because it's pretty short

Look at me reading 10 books at once... Oh well. Also, I remember seeing the movie for tge 1st part of this book and honest to God I don't remember any of it. And I've been enjoying the extra worldbuilding and character development so far!

I switched to the English e-book version. I wanna finish some of the books I'm in the middle of before starting new ones

I need to impress the club of student socialists, so it was about time for me to read this haha. In seriousness though, the edition I'm reading is also abridged but not this exact one. Mine runs about 500 pages and I'm hoping to make notes as I go along. So far I'm rereading every paragraph about 5 times and it's looking like this is gonna take me a while. Oh boy!

I really like Nao. So much personality

For my American Novel class. I have seen the movie and read Mrs Dalloway a few years ago so I'm looking forward to reading this!

We watched the movie in class the other day and I forgot so much about it... now it's just time to finish the novel
