I've had some pretty wild massages, and(.) I mean funny wild, not sexual. There was one in Japan where the girl came in and said, 'Please lie on floor,' so I lay on the floor, and she was giving me a massage. I started relaxing, but then suddenly she started to sing, "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.' I'm going,' Oh shit, where do I put myself now.' Thank God she didn't know the middle eight.

We recorded a whole bunch of stuff at Lympne Castle. Why? I don't know. I suspect because it was nearish to where we lived, on the way to Folkestone on the south coast. (...)so you'd get these kinds of slightly oddball things happening and oddball songs coming out. I'm a bit more purposeful these days than I was then. I was probably smoking a little too much wacky baccy at the time.

OKAY, I ADMIT IT I HAVE A THING FOR OLDER LADIES.
Eleanor Rigby, bless her soul, was not the only one. I just happen to get on well with them and I always have. I find them interesting, so often for what they can teach us, and they're usually quite happy to share their stories with you.

I often muse upon what might have happened, had I not ended up in a band that rather took over my life. I wonder about the path I thought I was on with my A level in English literature and where that might have led me.

We thought of ourselves as Lennon and McCartney from very early on. It was because we'd heard of Gilbert and Sullivan, Rodgers and Hammerstein. Lennon and McCartney? That's good. There are two of us, and we can fall into that pattern. We put our names next to each other in our school exercise books.

We sing 'She's a big teaser' but what we mean is 'She's a prick teaser'. Our friends would know that was what we meant. The BBC might not. In the UK, the BBC was known as 'Auntie' (...)So, the prudish BBC would hear 'big teaser', and we'd get away with it.

The idea is that all these material possessions are well and good, but money can't buy you what you really need. The irony here is that just after Paris, we went to Florida where, if not love, money certainly could buy you a lot of what you wanted. But the premise stands, I think. Money can't buy you a happy family or friends you can trust.

When John and I hitchhiked to Paris in 1961, we went to a café on the Left Bank, and the waitress was older than us - easy, since John was turning twenty-one and I was nearly twenty. She poured us two glasses of vin ordinaire, and we noticed she had hair under her arms, which was shocking: 'Oh my God, look at that; she's got hair under her arms!' (...)You had to be a real beatnik. It's such a clear memory for me.

Like many writers, I really am a bit of a voyeur; if there's a lit window and there's someone in it, I will watch them. Hands up, guilty. It's a very, very natural thing.
In a strange way, I may be interested in this subject matter because I get stared at quite a lot myself. It's because I have a recognisable face.

Tão pouco a perder.

in [Lennon] he recognised a partner whose name might one day be paired with his as Gilbert was paired with Sullivan, and Rodgers with Hammerstein. He acknowledges that the interplay of Lennon and McCartney was 'nothing short of miraculous', describing how they 'wrote with two guitars'. 'The joy of that was that I was left-handed and he was right-handed, so I was looking in a mirror and he was looking in a mirror.'
