I am biased because I don’t love first person narratives. A lot of the book feels trapped in her internal world and dialogue rather than meaningful progression. She’s trying to solve the murder but really I feel like she’s making dumb decisions and being on the run.

I am disgusted and in awe

“The sky has split open like a bloodshot eye…” hell yeah. The body and botanical horror is finally kicking off along with the pacing. Was a little late in the game for me but still enjoying.

The prose is beautiful. The opening lines were so good I had to read them out loud. I love an unreliable narrator. I love the setting. Downside, I feel like the botanical imagery is getting a little repetitive. It’s beautiful, but too frequent to feel precious.

“Yes, she says she’d rather be a boy. Or at least a woman who’s allowed to live like a man, like Joan of Arc. Or failing that, a pebble.”
“A pebble?”
“Yes. She says pebbles look very peaceful and are unencumbered by ugly things like blood and breasts.”

Immediate yes. It’s like older English Shirley Jackson. YES.

Oh this is worth the hype.
