In the first 3 (I-III) Hymns, Novalis sings the praises of both Day and Night, their role in Creation and their separate characteristics. The Day, with its light, rules the Material, the physical world, appearing as a benign king but in truth being a cruel dictator. But Night opens the eyes of the soul that can reach beyond matter, to the spiritual, the Eternal, symbolized by the image of the Beloved, mother & lover
