ish, nearly done, everything but the epilogue, it did kinda become a mystery novel at the end, but I stick by my earlier statement, more of a cozy gothic novel than a cozy mystery novel, and that's not a bad thing, the book's got atmosphere for days, both in the castle and the quaint Illinois town in which it's set.

I don't think this is actually a mystery novel, it's a novel with a mystery IN it, but it's actually more of a gothic novel, a modern day cozified gothic novel, certainly, but the way things happen, the protagonist is almost completely passive to the mystery. Things happen to her and she responds, she notices things, but she isn't LOOKING to solve the mystery

It's now been 9 months since I read any of this. I feel like at the rate this is going, it's going to sit beside A Deepness in the Sky forever on my eternal "currently reading" list. Just have to ignore all the disappointing spoilers and buckle down and read it.

I can see why Becky enjoyed this, quite charming setting and very likeable protagonist

"The Ion Cannon is targeting us! Get out of its range!" I doubt anyone else remembers StarLancer, but this bit gave me a serious flashback. Stupid ion cannon.

ish, I agree with Becky, the "trapped in a ski lodge during a blizzard with a murderer" chapter is probably the funniest chapter in SxF yet, especially loved the character names, just wish the author had drug it out a bit more because I was enjoying the setup so much, though it was very funny (and logical) the anticlimactic way the "mystery" got resolved

Oops, couple mistakes in this chapter, first he had a section set in Britannia and the start of the section said Horn of Africa, then he had another section claiming to be set in the Horn of Africa, but actually at the Cape of Good Hope (or Cape of Storms). It's a easy enough mistake: South end of South America is Cape Horn, EAST end of Africa is the Horn of Africa.
