I know, I know... aren't I reading like 3 other books right now? (or 4... or 6) Yes... not even like I'm not enjoying them, just... can't get settled on any of them (well, except Twelve Months, but I only have the hardcover version, so I can't just pop up a website or app and read it whenever like the rest)

Solomon Kane is at once both a much more laudable protagonist than Conan (in many ways) while also undeniably a bit frustrating as he tends to quixotically throw himself into danger without much thought and ends up in over his head only for things to work out providentially. I also have to admit that I miss Conan's sense of humor. Also think these would've done better with gothic rather than sensational vibes.

ah, Space Railways, I've seen them done a few times and honestly, I can't say I've ever found it more than "ok". I think the real problem is the basic dichotomy that the idea seems silly but the presentation is often dead serious. I have this suspicion that doing this sort of thing in a steampunk setting might work a lot better as the inherent rule-of-cool anachronism of steampunk makes it ok to mix silly and serious

Wow, this is perhaps the most surreal moment in the whole book, one of the characters mentions that the antagonist is linked with Osama bin Ladin and then explains who he is because this book was released in '99 and the average person had no clue who he was back then. Just... so weird to remember a time when that name meant nothing to most of us.

It was due yesterday so I'm actually making an effort to finish it (not that it's bad or that I haven't been enjoying it, just been distracted by rereading Safehold)
