This is the third time this book has mentioned Christianity solely, specifically and intently. My question is, if they got all the Christians into their party, how then did they come about rejecting it so entirely on every level? I doubt this book will answer that, or even mention that there should be one.

Funny we're splitting hairs (and labels) regarding how poor the majority of the party were, when it seems to be that few could be categorized as wealthy, and the majority were 20-30 somethings. This should lead quite directly to the conclusion that they BELIEVED themselves to be poor, and cheated by older, richer generations, and that a new party would cure their ills. Therein lies the eternal arrogance, and danger.

So far this is breathtakingly superficial, with each chapter ending in "further reading" which is presumably books (most no longer in print) which contain details this book has eschewed in favor of a very layman's overview. Makes for faster reading though, as many sections can easily be passed over as they're simply rewordings of Biblical accounts we all know so well.

Already praised evolution at least a dozen times; hopefully she's gotten that out of her system 'cause it's a waste of word count.
Also had the obligatory Humans Bad paragraph, so maybe that's also out of the way early. I hope.
Please be like how Avise is about his hatred of Christianity; get it out at the introductory chapter and let it lie after that.

Another reunion that would mean something if either of these people were characters. I don't know Chango. I don't care about Blas. This means nothing.

He literally believed that letter a handful of pages ago. Did the author forget? Blas has no new information, has gained no new insight. This is just rambling.

Hmm, what a shame all of that was offscreen now it's done and no longer matters. Everything is done and no longer matters in this story.

This would be a lot more meaningful if they had ever shared a scene together before things started. These might as well be two strangers meeting for the first time for all this scene does.

Going to the promised land is literally colonizer behavior, what on Earth are you on about? He's going to invade a land and use it for his purposes and then leave when he's done with it XD

Well thank goodness for another half page full of random bird names and field notes about a bird that has nothing to do with anything. Imagine if this space had been used for CHARACTER or WORLDBUILDING -.-

I realize this is his mother's assessment, but in what alternate dimension has Blas shown any signs of having a good heart? Because he liked a girl we never knew? Because he likes birds? Because he hates Audobon, like a good little modern activist? WHERE. He has never had a save the cat moment anywhere that we have seen. Maybe somewhere offscreen, but that isn't real to us, the readers.

Y'know, if this had started about 100 pages in, this might be a more engaging book, 'cause then I'd be getting up to speed on what's going on instead of time skipping.

Be a shame if there were some characters and story to go with this thinly veiled rhetoric.

I was kind of onboard with the kind of fanciful, not entirely hinged descriptions... but these last two chapters make me think he may just not be good at painting pictures with words.

First person, second person, AND third person.
Buddy, calm down and pick a lane.

So, basically, the non-white birders are good and smart and in tune with nature.
What a fascinating and nuanced take. I'm sure this will be important to the plot and characters and isn't just the author's personal world view spewing forth onto the page for no reason.
