HOW am I not closer to the end?

So. Bored. I want to believe Berg will justify all this but I'm growing less and less convinced.

The last 30 or so pages had me SO ANXIOUS. Anyhow... time to preorder book 2 I guess?

Torn between 'I want to devour this book as fast as possible' and 'I need to savor it because the sequel doesn't come out until next year'. The former impulse will probably win.

Just finished a full sort-through of my want-to-read shelf. It's now down to... 1,208. Oof.

So here's a fun thing: my WoK review as it stands is actually over GR's character limit, and cannot be edited to add new text. I'm going to have to... archive it in the comments, somehow, so I can write an updated review.

I feel weird about finishing my WoK reread today - anyone who's aware of the bombshell Brandon dropped on Reddit today can guess why. I've never felt more alienated from the Cosmere than tonight.

The chasm kata scene. I'd forgotten.

Doing my first-ever full-series reread. It's been...years since I've actually read WOK, though I still have a pretty encyclopedic knowledge of its major events. What I'd forgotten: the incredible satisfaction of each incremental step as Kaladin wins the trust of Bridge 4. There's something about his persistence against the odds that warms my heart, just as it brings the bridgemen to trust him.

ONE. BOOK. LEFT.

The writing's gotten a little more tolerable, now that Bear has gotten most of her infodumping out of the way. But... I'm 20% of the way through and there isn't really a plot, or much of a sense of urgency. I feel like I'm pushing myself to try and find out *if* anything happens.

Feeling weird about the writing style. It's little details like a society that doesn't use the word 'day' somehow still having 'Teflon', as well as ongoing things like the strange, kind of overwrought sentence structures. It's also WAY jargon-y, with things like: "Connla and Singer had sensoed my feed, downloaded the full experience from my fox, and re'd the ayatana of the spliced-in switches."
Contemplating a DNF.

It's not GRRM's fault his fans are shit (okay, not ENTIRELY his fault) but god, every time one of them decides they're going to try and convert me I want to burn the man in effigy.

This writing is so... contrived? Sloppy? Just plain bad? I feel like I'm reading the novelization of a pitch the CW rejected.

I'm having some Feelings about how this worldbuilding, but the upshot is basically: it would have been way better to set in a wholly secondary world, because I'm full of questions about how this magic system works in other faiths. (Islamic anticonicism is uh... an obvious problem, and we already have confirmed faux-Morocco existing so like???)

Also I'm VERY bummed the ARC doesn't have the maps because while Lutece is clearly Paris, making Sarance France, and Alba is England and Menorco is presumably Morocco, the fact that Ystara's capital is Cadenz makes me think it's Spain (Cadiz) and I have Several Questions about this geography - starting with the mention of a 'land bridge' which I'm now guessing is at Gibraltar and also, where'd Portugal go?

So uh... nobody else seems to be talking about the fact that Nix has the hierarchy of angels backwards.

Hey all - I'm taking a hiatus from actually writing reviews of everything I read. Not sure for how long. I have a tendency to turn habits into obligations and obligations into stressors, and I've let that happen with reviewing, and it's honestly had a negative impact on how much I read and how much I enjoy reading. I'd like to get that mojo back, so I'm giving myself a break.

What is with male GoT fans who think "if you're mad about rape and violence in fiction, wait until you have to deal with the real world" is some kind of gotcha? Yes? I am also mad about rape and violence in the real world? Because I have a moral compass? What the fuck?
