How did this make it onto my Want to Read list? I saw it in the background of a YouTuber’s video and then in the library.

Prediction: madame boden was the baby

Awful! The author does skillfully tease about more info and then provide it in short order, keeping you curious and weaving the story together at a good clip.

Madame Boden is the best character. Martha is second best. That story line is my favorite. I do not think I’m a fan of magical realism generally.

9/10 for ambiance. 4/5 references to the role of women (and how hard things are for them even as the women do well) are annoying.

I do have sort of a basic problem with the idea a PhD student wouldn’t think to Google a person he was researching…

The things that nags at my brain is the question of Circe’s needs. I understand mortal needs. Her som is a demigod… yet he needs food, will die, needs sleep, etc. So a god doesn’t need those things, right? Apparently not. She eats and sleeps. She can feel physical pain. She will live forever? Yes. He will not? No. I like clearer roles. I feel like I don’t understand her limitations.

Yeesh. The lack of description generally has been a good thing for these last sections!

The f-word has come up exactly twice thus far. Both instances are used to reference copulation with divine bovine. Just an interesting stat.

Excellent pacing. Very mysterious without being a mystery. Absolutely tantalizing but horribly gritty. Gut-wrenching but not a horror piece. Love the first person. Love the flashbacks and the little nuggets of info we get each time. Im hooked though im sad.

Haven’t been so enthralled by a book in a while. It’s gritty, starting with death, and engaging. Normally i don’t like books that jump from past to “present”. I cant quite tell what’s next. Cant see down the road. But BOY i have thoughts about the break up!!! The next section may kill me tho.

Guess: Gabe marries THIS American and the Ruth Ellis detail is foreshadowing.
