reading for book club. it’s fine

fucking loveddddddd this book as a tween and was so excited to find it for $1 at a book sale last weekend. i was double excited to see that in 2023 the author revised it and republished a newer version that tells the story a little differently and has more of her current voice as a writer. it felt auspicious for me to have read it at its inception and again during its rebirth. really enjoying it.

just watched the movie and loved it so much i immediately picked this up from the library

re-read “on self respect” the other day and was like. ok joan forgive me i forgot how good you were. so here we are

i have no idea what’s going on. i love it

listening to the audio drama while reading the shakesclear translation bc idk what’s going on 😭

i now have 3 copies of this book because my 1960 signet classic copy is falling apart, the annotated copy i got from renrevival has HORRIBLE nonsensical footnotes, and my norton critical edition just came in the mail. so if anyone wants a copy of Jane Eyre with 1700 stupid fucking annotations lmk

it’s me i’m cathy

hard read but very necessary. learning so much horrible history

love how razor sharp her prose is but am finding the essays to feel pretty dated. all the name drops and french words mean nothing to me sry💔

not sure why i’m so obsessed with didion lately, as we’re nothing alike in either personality, ideals, or career. but i have been reading a lot of her work and it’s made me interested in her personal life. i’m not sure how i feel about a publishing house releasing this kind of sensitive information posthumously, but it does give really important insight on some of what she wrote in Blue Nights.

joan didion the woman that you (were)

love me some borges ❤️ been on the library of babel website clicking around the floors and decided to just read all of this stories while i’m at it

highly recommend listening to the audiobook this is so good

not sure if i like it or not yet

The only true enemies to lovers I’ve ever read and even when they are lovers they’re still enemies

jude jude jude jude jude jude jude jude jude

this is having a ACOMAF moment where it’s soooo much better than the first book bc there’s way less world building / exposition that needs to happen. Still hate Creons name and think it’s dumb that they call them Alfs instead of elves but otherwise i like

i need something to fill the Cruel Prince shaped hole in my chest. i may just end up re reading it eventually but until then…..

the opening chapter of this book is genuinely one of the best i’ve ever read. for a book written in the 1930’s it’s remarkably easy to read and like, weirdly relatable??? the plot is also very unique. i can already tell this is going to be a new all time favorite book of mine and ive only read 7 chapters.

a little slow rn and it’s been so long since i’ve read the other folk of the air books that i cannot remember who anyone is or the extremely complex political system and court scheme
