Finally we get more information about Morgan Sloat, now from his own perspective. From what it seems, he’s an ambitious, intelligent, and manipulative person.

Jack becomes a threat to Sloat because he has already been to the Territories. However, Sloat seems to know far more about that world, which puts him at an advantage.

Now we know the current narrator’s name is Sebastian Bell, or at least that’s what everything suggests. However, he still has this feeling of being in someone else’s skin, and everything remains extremely confusing, since his memory is gone.

The Samaritan seems to be the only figure who actually has answers, and because of that he ends up guiding Sebastian. But his intentions are still a mystery. Ally or …??

What shocks me is that he’s judged not only for the murder, but also for his behaviour at his mother’s funeral: not crying, smoking, drinking coffee, going to the cinema soon after, and lacking faith in God.

The trial feels influenced by things that shouldn’t matter so much. Society seems more focused on punishing his attitude than the crime itself.

I agree that Meursault deserves the death penalty for taking a man’s life. What shocks me is that he’s judged not only for the murder, but also for his behaviour at his mother’s funeral: not crying, smoking, going to the cinema soon after, and lacking faith in God.

Meursault keeps the habit of saying out loud things most people would rather keep to themselves. I’ve been saying since the beginning of the book that he’s not exactly a saint. And what about that judge with the crucifix, huh?

In this chapter, the focus isn’t really the murder itself, but Meursault’s morality and how incompatible he is with society.

Chapter ‘The Passage’ finished. What was once just a theory has now become reality: Jake finally crosses the border and enters the Territories. Speedy continues to guide him as a mentor, while Jake begins to understand the idea of ‘twinners’, people connected across both worlds. It’s also becoming clear that his mum is far more important than he ever imagined. There’s no going back to a normal life from this point on

A-HA! I knew it! I was already suspicious that Meursault’s neutrality and his so-called ‘non-judgemental’ attitude were actually showing a darker side of him.

Of course, shooting the Arab was intensified by a kind of sensory breakdown he was going through, the heat, the pain in his eyes, etc. But for a man who’s supposedly passive, he still ended up committing something irreversible: a murder!

Meursault doesn’t see much point in chasing some idealised future. To him, the life he’s living right now is worth just as much as any other. While most people build their lives around future goals, Meursault seems to live almost entirely in the present.

Meursault loves acting like he’s indifferent to everything, but when it comes to doing questionable things, he doesn’t seem to hesitate. What a CYNIC. Maybe he’s not as indifferent as he likes to pretend, considering how often he ends up taking the wrong side of things.
Anyway, I hope Salamano finds his dog…

Meursault keeps up his usual neutral attitude in different situations. This time it’s about Raymond wanting to get revenge and humiliate a woman he’s interested in. Meursault doesn’t judge anyone or try to act like a protector, but the moment he agrees to help Raymond write a letter to lure her back just so he can punish her emotionally, he already starts stepping into some dangerous territory.

The very next day after his mum’s funeral, Meursault goes to the beach, runs into Marie, goes to the cinema with her, and the two end up getting romantic. Totally unexpected.

In this first chapter, Meursault showed very little emotion regarding what had happened to his mother. Instead, he seemed far more concerned with everything else around him: the heat, the sunlight, the noise, the sweat, and even with the possibility that his boss might disapprove of the days he had taken off work.

I’m getting more and more curious about Speedy Parker! Jack keeps going back to him because of his curiosity. Speedy seems able to see something inside Jack that nobody else can. My God, his mum is dying!! And there are other worlds too 👁️

Jack is in Arcadia Beach with his ill mother. The place feels decayed and unsettling. Signs suggest reality is unstable, and Jack becomes aware of a looming threat connected to Morgan Sloat.

Jack and his mum escaped to Arcadia Beach. At only 12, he already carries fears no kid should have. He lost his dad, he’s hiding from the man they call ‘uncle’, and now his mum seems seriously ill. He also met a suspicious guy called Speedy Parker, but it’s still way too early to fully judge him.

Kino and his family’s life just keeps getting worse and worse. It’s hard to escape other people’s greed. If he’d stayed quiet from the moment he found the pearl instead of shouting about it, things might’ve turned out differently. Now the family’s falling apart and nobody knows what tomorrow’s gonna bring. He’s even killed someone now…

One good punch in that posh doctor’s face and he’d finally know what proper suffering feels like. Whatever happened to practising medicine out of compassion?

Even with Lidia there, their connection stayed central. Their club scene, the heartfelt words, and that long-awaited moment moved me to tears. Listening to "American Pie" while reading made it peak; imagining Mateo overcoming his shyness for one last performance—knowing it was his final day—was heartbreaking.
