I'm gonna try to stick it out but I think I hate this book. I hate the word precog the most. I hate postcred the second most.

Word of the day: vituperate. Verb. To criticize or scold harshly using negative language. Borrowed from Latin vituperō.

If you ever decide to read Eco, it is my recommendation that you be familiar with at least one romance language. Familiar enough that you may be able to parse Latin, French, and Italian and the occasional Spanish without knowing them.

I am also getting Vietnam flashbacks to the parts of Foucalt's Pendulum where he goes on long historical rants in the middle of the story or dialogue lol.

You ever start a book and just know it's going to be an amazing ride? That is what I am experiencing at the moment of writing this.

"One can joke with a badly-wounded man and congratulate him on being out of it. One can disregard a dead man. But even a miner can't make a joke that sounds like a joke over a man who takes three hours to die, after the top part of his head has been taken of by a bullet fired at twenty yards' range."

The school year chapters all go like this

I was romantically in love with Brian, he was 12 and I was 17. He later died at the Battle of the Mons.

Reginald used to bully me relentlessly. He later was declared criminally insane. He died at the battle of Ypres.

My headmaster had a reputation for kissing the young boys. He would live a full and happy life.

It's so strange that I really did not like this book when I started reading it. I feel like I resonate with it very deeply now. It's so melancholic and bland, but Watanabe keeps pushing on. It reminds of how I feel about my life sometimes. Sometimes life feels so sad and overwhelming, but you just keep moving. Not because you want to, you just have to.

I got a lot of reading done on the plane. I don't have much time to read anymore with the new job because I do so much overtime. I hope I get to finish this book before my new job makes me kill myself.

Anyways, I didn't like this book at first but I'm kind of falling into it. The author has a weird relationship with sex though, I think. But tbh who doesn't

The "I have constant sex all the time but it's meaningless and I hate life" trope is soooo washed up

I can hardly focus on reading, today has been such a terrible day. I hate Phinia. I hate Atkins and Pearce. I hate working. I hate Ed, and Elizabet, and that other one's name. I hate how they demand all my time, for one small issue it's the end of the world. I hate Chase, who doesn't seem to understand the urgency and keeps giving me the run around.

I did not know they had cicadas in Europe.

I love Ignatius, he's like a proto-redditor
