so much MMC acting like a dick and FMC immediately forgiving him - he may be *saying* mean things, but the fmc *just knows* he's being honest when he apologizes (and not when he's saying mean things, I guess). unromantic to me that the fmc "feels safe" and trusts him when he treats her the same as all the "bad" people always have (he knows best, she just needs to listen and stop being "crazy")

I like this book, but the MMC having zero empathy for the FMC while whining about his own circumstances all the time is so off-putting. Especially bc I assume he knew what he was getting her into. But he's content to just let it drive her "crazy" or to her own death, I guess! How dare she ask for a tiny bit of attention! So spoiled!!!! /s It's worse that the FMC swoons every time he smiles or deigns to talk to her.

does EVERY book with a criminal heroine have to become "the 1% are people too"? 😮‍💨

I hate the way 90% of authors treat "unattractive" people. I am obviously NOT talking about the MMC here, who is supposedly ugly, but so incredibly MASCULINE that women are throwing themselves at him. God forbid "unattractive" people just fucking EXIST without needing to be constantly dunked on by the narrative. We all know that THEY don't deserve romance, am I right? GOD romance books are so shallow way too often.

omg this book hates the OW for no reason whatsoever. She's dull and boring and hardworking! Clearly not worthy of falling in love with, unlike our manic pixie FMC! And the poor MMC, he doesn't know that he doesn't actually care about her, she's just convenient (and does everything for him)! If she's not fucking his friend Lionel, whom he ALSO only associates with bc he's "useful," I'm going to riot. Fuck the MCs lol

This book is cruising towards a 1* for me, but I feel completely the opposite of the majority of the top negative reviews - which are, of course, all about how much the FMC sucks because that's 90% of what romance readers complain about, forever and always.

I find it pretty gross that I'm supposed to find it endearing that the MMC "made" servants at the inn apologize to FMC & it's treated as "she should stand up for herself/not accept treatment like that!" when it's literally just the MMC feeling entitled to special treatment. How sweet that he thinks the FMC is entitled to special treatment, too. 🙄

is this a romance book or an ode to how hot the hero is? maybe the author should write another 8 chapters detailing how hot every woman on planet Earth finds him. I don't think I've got the message just yet.

Also, Roger (Shrewsbury) is hilarious in this one. He's so pathetic, it's almost endearing. And Lady Holmes is hilarious to me too bc she's the perfect mix of heinous and pathetic.

I do miss Inspector Treadles, though.

This book: Everyone knows what's best for Helena except Helena & she needs a personality transplant so she can realize how right everyone else was actually & that she DIDN'T know herself. Poor baby David, pining after her (and treating her like trash) while STUPID Helena chased an UNWORTHY man instead of A MAN OF CHARACTER like David. Was gonna be a 2* but what a silly ending, I laughed at several points.

I witnessed him being a good dad for an ENTIRE 24 hrs and now I LOVE HIM. Over a decade of near-constant verbal abuse and sexual harassment? Who cares about that? He was treated badly as a child! And he WANTED me all along, who cares how he treated me? Fuck Helena too lol, what a revolting "love" story. Also really gross when read alongside RTH. Damn, at least Millie would have half a reason to treat Fitz like shit.

If only everyone in this book gave HALF of a fuck as much about Helena's feelings as they do about David's OR as they do about her reputation. Everyone besides Helena sucks so much in this book, she's the only one who's not a raging hypocrite.

Everyone caring more about Helena's reputation than they do about her is making me so mad. Especially Fitz, Venetia (you hypocrites!), and Millie. I can't believe them "helping" preserve her reputation is being treated as kindness. Of course they're helpinhelping! It's THE ONLY THING they care about. Hastings' character concept is so stupid and his "love" is so selfish holy hell.

omg this ending sucked sooo much, ruined an otherwise pretty good book. Also, the AUDACITY to have this book tagged as a MOC when they don't get married til the very end.

Just started and already can't believe how boring the MMC is. Oh, he's incredibly athletic, handsome, wealthy, perfect body, and everyone wants him? Oh and BTW despises fashion because that's GIRLY and wishes he could be a fighter (lmao, can't have us thinking he's weak & feminine like those other aristos) and also hates socializing with women lol. Pathetic.
