Ugh. Why does the 1st chapter have to be a horny, arrogant, ass with two references to his cock before we even get to the 1st chapter with the main character?

Other than needing a good copy editing, this book is, so far, fun, engaging, and a bit of a different twist on werewolf, excuse me, Lycan world building.

Oh. My. I had forgotten how incredible The Others books were. I stayed up almost all night reading and am having a hard time putting this one down. New set of characters, and I sincerely hope there will be several more stories to come.

I believe I was a good quarter into this story before I realized that Three Pines wasn't . In the story. The fact that this absence didn't register at first surprised me, because I truly enjoy the visits to Three Pines. Perhaps, what I more truly enjoy is the play of differences between Gamache and Beauvoir. The incredible thoughtfulness shared with us, the readers, make it seem that we are a part of the team.

Once again, as with the first in this series, I am stunned at the richness in description and the depth of the many characters. How Penny is able to do this without losing me is, in itself, a mystery. I find myself thrilled to be back in Three Pines, even if it is because of a murder--and I hope the guilty party isn't one of the main characters.

Enjoying the descriptive writing, such as this snippet: "Three Pines wasn’t on any tourist map, being too far off any main or even secondary road. Like Narnia, it was generally found unexpectedly and with a degree of surprise that such an elderly village should have been hiding in this valley all along. "

"Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, I thought. For they are soggy and hard to light." Lines like this keep me chuckling throughout these books.

Immi, early inviting. Dove right in and came up happily surrounded by a rich cast of characters, a lovely town, and a mystery with depth.

I am loving this story so far. I mean, how have I never thought about vampire and ghoul dentition before? World building is very matter-of-fact and not at all explicit--it just IS, which took some getting used to, but I think it helped me settle into the time and accept it as immediate, instead of some vague future time or alternate reality. Fun.

Ugh. I am having a hard time liking the two main characters. G is a pompous, condescending ass. Daffy, whose name I struggled to remember, seems cold and just clueless enough to annoy me. Am seriously thinking I might not finish this. It doesn't help that I have little tolerance for cheating, regardless the rationale.

I have been sucked in to this all too bleak world. Haven't wanted to stop reading because I can't wait to find out what happens next. I am hopeful that the story arc here does not end in a giant cliffhanger.

If bleak was the feel the reader is supposed to get, it was a success. Sight, sound, touch, smell, and even taste . Dayummm.

I am wondering if this book might be a good one to introduce for a small reading group of students who like mysteries and codes. could tie in with Chasing Vermeer and The Westing Game.

The Aldiko version I am trying to read on my Android device seems to be missing pages at the end. Either that or the ending is incredibly abrupt. I will take a look at the Adobe version on my laptop.

Works fine on the Adobe version on my laptop.

Lesson topics that can easily be touched on with this book include: opposites, compare/contrast, onomatopoeia, inference, week/month/year

This series never fails to fascinate. I love seeing the world anew from the perspective of the different indigene, Intuits, elementals, and others--the literal, the figurative, the very young, the incredibly ancient--it comes together I. a way that should be confusing, but is handled so beautifully that it isn't.

So far, I am enjoying the introductory stories at.the beginning of each chapter. These help establish a perspective for.the switch in time periods. I am not so sure about how often generalizations about different countries and/or cultures are used.
