I have absolutely no recollection of reading this book bc it was summer reading for AP11…I don’t think I even knew then what was happening in the book bc I listened to the audio book and all of it went out the other ear.

Souji is a breath of freaking fresh air. He’s unorthodox, progressive, challenges norms, and does objectify civilians…and he can humble Rin without diminishing her. Clap clap clap. New sleepy audio book. What I gather so far: (1) men are horn dogs and predators and misogynist (except for lodger dude) (2) ACAB (3) poverty is a systemic issue (but we been knew obv)

I knew sue lynn would pull through but also just makes it more of a shame that the first half wasn’t as flushed out. Liyin’s inner monologue gets very flat and repetitive, same sentence structure, all the rhetorical questions…but I am excited to read how it ends but also sad that there will be no more liyin and zhangwei afterwards…

I wish the author didn’t make the FL stubborn and defensive. You don’t need to have miscommunication to have a plot. Sue Lynn tan really loves betrayal plots though. So many things that could’ve been executed better which is a shame bc this is a good story. Hope it gets better?

With books written on China by people outside of China, as with any area study, I am always skeptical of the biases that the author holds…this one is no different. I’m only at the beginning but I feel like their descriptions fall short and are kind of filtered through a westernized eye. But we shall see

Anne is kinda starting to annoy me but also I know that the social contexts and norms are different esp with gender, medicine, and marriage/divorce.
