Damn…I’m super bummed about Murong Chuyi… 😔

Wow! It’s been a long time since I last read this. I forgot how different it is from the movie! As usual, the book is much better.

This book isn’t bad but I just really hate insta-love. A lot of authors seem to like covering up shallow romance with “soulmates” as an excuse but that really does not work for me. I just can’t get invested in it at all.

Holy shit! This book is just one insane twist after another! I did not see ANY of this coming! I seriously feel like I’m on a crazy roller coaster ride and I love it! 😱🤯

Woah! Yet another shocking turn of events! 😳 These books are so good! I’ve been a bit busy with other things recently and haven’t had as much time to read. I really need to get back on track with this book. Luckily, I was very easily hooked back in after only reading a little bit tonight.

This is okay so far, although slightly on the boring side. Also, Aileen’s situation with the vampire’s seems a little too similar to Kira’s situation with the Tuann in the author’s other series, The Firebird Chronicles. So far, that series is infinitely more interesting than this one despite the fact that I generally enjoy fantasy more than I do sci-fi.

Holy shit! I did not see THAT coming!! 😳 Murong Lian really just dropped a huge bomb out of nowhere there! Damn! These books are just SO freaking good!!

I wish that I didn’t hate Saber so much. I also wish that Zak didn’t act so out of character in these books. I really do want to like Saber because she cares so much about animals and hates people who abuse them, which I 100% agree with. Unfortunately, she is insufferable in every other way. Almost everything she does annoys me or makes me roll my eyes. It makes me sad because I love the rest of the Guild Codex.

Picking out every single piece of green onion in the soup just because your boyfriend hates them. Now that’s true love.

Sometimes I just really don’t know what the heck is going on with Goodreads. I literally just started this book and for some reason it was saying that I was 72% done? I wouldn’t have otherwise updated so soon but I just wanted to fix that to reflect where I’m actually at in the book 😅

Okay, I officially take back every critical thing that I ever said about Mo Xi. He is the sweetest, most loyal, most adorable little grumpy princess ever! I love both him and Gu Mang SO much!! ❤️❤️🥰❤️❤️

Holy shit! How is this book so amazing?! It’s already far surpassed every expectation that I had going into this series! Like damn, I am just hanging on every word here! It’s so painful but SO good! 😭

Gu Mang wasn't stupid. He knew Mo Xi still held him in his heart. The enormity of it stunned him, but it also sunk him into utter despair. He could scheme over every black and white chess piece on the board—all of them save for his general, his lover, his princess. The piece he wanted to protect the most.

I knew Gu Mang was trying to protect Mo Xi by treating him so coldly.

These books are SO good! Sadly the one thing that I still just really do not like is the romance. Graydon does absolutely nothing for me. This series would honestly be better without the romance. I love literally everything else about it. Luckily, the romance is more of a subplot so that makes it more tolerable.

I love TGCF but damn this volume is so painful! So much of it is just completely heartbreaking and depressing. It’s honestly pretty difficult to get through at times 💔

Wow, I actually forgot how hard Mu Qing tried to apologize to Xie Lian after the incident with the 33 heavenly officials. I also don’t think he’s being entirely unreasonable. I still think he messed up, but I actually like Mu Qing better this time around than I did the last time I read this book.

Before Gu Mang had defected, he was the one who had failed Gu Mang. He was the one who didn't accompany Gu Mang, didn't see the cares weighing on Gu Mang's heart. He was the one who treated Gu Mang like an invincible god, forgetting that beneath the war armor lay a mortal's body made of flesh and blood. A mortal body, still struggling despite its wounds.

FINALLY Mo Xi gets it! But god this is ripping my heart out!

Mo Xi's eyes filled with tears. He couldn't hold back any longer. He reached out and wrapped his arms around Gu Mang, hugging him so tightly, so forcefully, so deeply, as if he wanted to break Gu Mang apart and smuggle him into his bones, as if he wanted to use his own flesh to imprison Gu Mang's. Only then could he keep this man with him forever.

It was this dispute in the throne room that had led Gu Mang to lose faith, and it was difficult to judge who had been in the right.

Okay, so overall I really like Mo Xi but sometimes he just frustrates the hell out of me. Like how??? Please tell me how the hell it was difficult to judge who was in the right in that situation?? Wtf Mo Xi??

Back then, I loved you more than I feared death.

Gods damn!! How is this book so much better than the last one? It’s so heart-wrenchingly sad and yet deeply moving at the same time. I literally haven’t been able to put it down for the last hundred pages or so! The sweet moments from the past are so beautiful but so painful at the same time 😭💔

Emotional angst > physical torture

Gu Mang stared hard into his eyes. They were very close, their eyes fixed on one another's, their breaths mingling. Mo Xi found it inappropriate and was about to push him away, when he heard Gu Mang say, "But... you look like you're in pain…like it really hurts. Hating me, it hurts you?"

So far I’m enjoying this volume much more than the previous one. It’s not just relentless torture for Gu Mang. The stuff with Li Qingqian and the insane Liao Kingdom guoshi was really interesting. Mo Xi is a total badass even if he does have a nasty temper. I’m really enjoying these parts with Gu Mang living a Xihe Manor too. It’s nice to have some more humorous and lighthearted scenes for a change.

Ugh the Goodreads app is driving me crazy recently. It keeps marking things as completed when they’re not for some weird reason 😩

So far this is very borderline for me. I’ve been wary of reading anything by meatbun for a while now just based things I’ve heard about her writing that really aren’t my cup of tea. Yuwu seemed like the only one that might be somewhat safe. I at least wanted to give it a try since meatbun is so popular. The book is interesting so far but some of the themes and content are a bit much for me personally.

I just finished the main story and I have to say that it was quite a ride! I have my complaints, which I will discuss in my review when I finish reading the extras. Overall all though, this is a great story with deeply moving romance. I definitely feel like this was one of the most well thought out danmei that I’ve read with one of the most cohesive plots.

I always feel so terrible for Xie Lian during the flashbacks showing the fall of Xianle. All he wanted was to help people and do the right thing. He was still so young and it all just blew up in his face. This is one of my least favorite parts of TGCF just because it’s so soul crushingly depressing. I’m not sure which is worse, this flashback or the ones after the fall of Xianle 💔😭

Goddamn! Li Feng is an ungrateful, backstabbing bastard just like his father!
