Frank is on page 56 of 192 of The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
I’ve skipped about 10 pages around the page 56 mark. It depicts animal cruelty that I preferred to avoid.
The act is likely central to establishing the cruelty of the characters - but I don’t need to read a detailed account.

This book is everything it has been reported to be - so far it has been incredible.

One of my “need to read someday” books - I regret waiting so long.

Frank is starting The Practicing Stoic
After reading Farnsworth’s book on Socratic thought - I wanted to jump right into this one.
This is a book I’m very much looking forward to reading.
Stoicism has been quite popular amongst the “Alpha-Bros” in social media. I’d like to assure my friends and family that I will not be pitching crypto schemes any time soon :)

The first chapter was interesting and this looks to be a promising read. A group looking to separate themselves from society based on economic philosophy…. Hmmm… that’s something I seem to recall from another book. This one looks to be a twist on that - let’s see where it goes.

I’m very much at the beginning of this book - so I’ll have to wait to see how it develops. My only complaint so far is that it is horribly edited - spelling errors, erroneous wording, strange misplaced words. It’s slightly jarring when encountered.

So far I’m enjoying this book.
It’s a good introduction to critical thinking that I think would benefit anyone wanting to have a better perspective on the purpose of their decisions.

This might be a nice supplemental reading for students that are in any area of study where they need to move beyond technique and incorporate meaningfulness into their work.

This has been an enjoyable read! I was watching a number of videos on YouTube around minimalism and there was a review of this book and an interview with the author that I found very interesting.

I decided to pick it up and give it a read and found it to be well worth the time. It helps me in understanding the need to be more selective in what I chose to do with time available. Looking forward to finishing it.

Beautiful book. The history of this area is amazing - especially Nootka Inlet and the islands of the area. I have both lived on and hiked the coastal areas of Vancouver Island (West and East). I thought I had some idea of the history - but this book is further proof that the history is much deeper and richer than I ever learnt previously.

I'm looking forward to reading this and gaining perspective.

Frank is starting Walt Disney's Donald Duck: Lost in the Andes (The Carl Barks Library #07)
Excited to start this book! I think that “Lost in the Andes” is a major turning point in the way that Barks wrote his stories. They seem more developed and complete from this story onwards.

That could just be my perception as it was this story and the later ones that were the first I read when I was younger. The earlier ones came later (I’m not so old that I got these new - I read reprints in the late 70’s and 80’s.

This is a book of poetry - which means I’ll only read one or two poems at a time. That way they can sink in and I can give them some thought.

I do like the ones I’ve read. I especially like the poem “ash” from the back cover. Worth reading if you are in a bookstore (it would need to be a good bookstore) or online if it exists there.

I’ve been reading this volume again and am continually impressed. It’s not hard to see why this is considered the greatest work comics has to offer.
Of course - I think that it’s amongst the best, but nothing really ever is the best - because there are other books and series that are equally good in different ways.

However - it is really, really good.

Frank is starting Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy
A new book that I've just started and am quite interested in. The idea of how data can clarify and manipulate our ideas of the world. It has always been an area that I wondered about - with our ability to better create data-driven decisions - what are our ethical obligations in handling that data (and presenting it) properly.

I'll make sure to update my thoughts.

Frank is on page 69 of 472 of The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth’s Past, #1)
This was another of the books that I started reading because of the recent literary review of science fiction I read.

Translated from Chinese, it also allows me to read fiction from another cultural perspective.

So far, I’m really enjoying the book. It’s more political at the moment - but it’s now turned and is becoming more science based.

This excellent book consists of a series of essays on the genre which offers an excellent overview of various eras in science fictions development.

I'm currently into the 1945-1965 era and enjoyed the previous essays dealing with earlier works. Of particular interest to me is the extensive bibliography and "read next" recommendations. I've discovered and re-discovered some works that I am now reading. Excellent.

This is a very interesting read of early mystical science fiction. I definitely can see how this book would have influenced Lovecraft. It's a tad bizarre and I can't help wondering where it's going.
Of course, being of an era past (almost 100 years ago) and in a writing style that has a bit more flourish - it's not an "easy" read. It's a good one though.

Frank is on page 132 of 440 of Offshore, Human Voices, The Beginning of Spring
The first story in this collection of three was fantastic. “Offshore” won the Booker Prizein 1979 and deservedly so.

It’s short (132 pages - hence the update) and packs a lot into itself. It’s a story where the economy of words hides a great deal of meaning and tricks you into thinking you’ve read a much longer novel.

I’m in the initial stages of this book - learning of the characters, moving towards a tragedy that will inform the rest of the novel.

Thus far - this book is fantastic. The writing is excellent - which is no surprise given the fact the author won the Nobel Prize for literature. I’m anxious to read each new page to move closer to finding out what will happen next.

Great book with some thoughtful ideas. The latest section is a bit more autobiographical about some time the author spent as a Shepard - which is less interesting to me than the earlier parts of the book.

I have found myself thinking about the concepts and the idea of pathways and trails outside of reading the book quite often. It's an interesting perspective on the way we move though the world.

Really enjoyed Part 1 of this book and was happy to see mention of the book "Flow" - another excellent book I read when I lived in Whistler. I actually remember reading "Flow" in a campsite between Whistler and Pemberton when I was on a day bike ride. That book was very influential on me and I think this book captures some of the themes that resonated with me from that book.
Part One was justification. Onward to P2

A very difficult book to put down! I'm really enjoying the ideas presented thus far and find they resonate with my own ideas and perspectives.

I could definitely see the challenges this book would present to a rigid mindset. The ideas challenge the idea of what it means to be human (homo sapien) and, in the first 100 or so pages, is setting the stage for what may come next.
