Forgot to update yesterday—super super good! Really into the way Hao illustrates scenes and the way in which she presents the facts. Highly recommend if you’re at all interested in AI—she does a very good job of illustrating why it’s controversial and where companies like OpenAI started to go wrong. Excited to read more!!

MY HEART AUGHHHH. Less relatable in some ways as Adina grows up, but still completely heartfelt and touching. I have teared up a lot. I know I’m going to cry before I finish the book, augh

I have to check in so regularly because there are specifics that are really getting to me.

Adina’s development and sense of loss in the second part really, really got to me. I think there’s just so much in her character that I can relate to, and it makes me ache for her.

I figured out who the other author was that this reminds me of besides Vonnegut—Miranda July. What a combo. I was destined to read this book

Done with part 1. Still very good. Obsessed with the small ways in which Bertino pulls the reader into the lives of these characters.

When Adina heard the song at the observatory, I knew immediately it was Philip Glass. I too appreciate his music.

Very sweet and interesting so far. Feels like Vonnegut (I fear I might say that about everything) mixed with something else I thought of earlier, but I cannot seem to place now. It might come back, who knows.

Just really interesting vignettes so far about growing up. In some ways, I can relate to Adina, which makes it even more endearing. Really drawn in by this as a whole

Really captivating so far. Feels almost Vonnegut-esque if he was from Canada and fixated on England’s colonization. Didn’t realize it jumped around on characters, so I’m excited to meet the new ones in chapter 2 :]

Starting to understand some qualms. Time skip feels awkward as it stands. Would have preferred just cutting from Miles and Lily’s pitch to where they were in the future instead of giving an Undercover Boss “Where Are They Now?” bit. Ugh. It’s better now that it’s back to specifics though, but yeah, chapter 20 is entirely unnecessary

I think maybe people hate this book because they have expectations for it that it doesn’t live up to? Whereas I just grabbed it cause I thought it seemed vaguely interesting. Because so far, I’m seriously vibing with the writing, the way it’s progressing, etc. I think it’s a very nuanced and interesting examination of one man’s inner life, and that’s very neat to me. Hopefully it doesn’t totally flub up

It’s still good so far, but maybe I’m insane. People on here have said it starts good and just deteriorates, which, if true, SUCKS because this intro stuff is really grabbing me :[
