Okay. So. That’s what happened. Yeah, it checks. Dell is a piece of shit- understand the trauma and feelings of inadequacy- still absolutely no excuse.

Okayyyyyy that was intense. I get it though- being willing to do anything to save someone you love. We’re not even near the end yet.

I love the imagery this author paints in such a casual conversational manner “I look out the window and my body is spilled out in the lawn, arms, legs twisted in improbable directions. Out of my cracked skull sprouts a thickened rot, a bursting spiral of leaves.” It’s all very botanical body-horror ♡.
In other notes, this chapter didn’t go as horribly as expected- which has me concerned for the next one.

God- men fucking suck. Incels to be specific, but at this point- what’s the difference?

I’m concerned. I’m glad that there seems to be at least someone on her side- and I’m interested in finding out why she struggles with her mom.
I have heavy motivation to finish this one now (no breaks- no time for decompressing) since a friend who finished this one is really interested in discussing it (or I’m the one who’s really interested in discussing it lol)

This book makes me so nervous with where it's going. Live-streaming is genuinely freaky to me. I get why Dell "likes" it tho- I also grew up in the Omegle days- but nothing is truly anonymous and that side has already shown itself.

I’m glad that the main character isn’t completely unlikable (I mean, she’s entertaining- just in a more…unhinged? way). You can tell how deeply she cares for her sister. It’s just a really sad situation overall, and I worry about how dark (and how quickly it’s going) to get. She already has the quintessential live-streamer issue, and she doesn’t even have that many viewers yet.

Okay. So that escalated very quickly. Going from eating some spicy peppers to getting caught shoplifting is not what I expected- but what I do expect is for things to get bad. Very quickly from the pace we’re going at.

Wow. I know it’s really easy to just press a button and stream (especially if you’re desperate) but like, no hesitation? I’ve definitely thought of it before, but I’m no internet persona, and the job definitely isn’t for just anyone- this can definitely go in a lot of directions, and with Dell already doing things for money, I’m scared.

This was recommended to me as a “really good but super messed up book”- which didn’t initially hook me… but seeing the name Ottessa Moshfegh on the back did. And immediately: it. is. so. good.
The writing is fantastic and refreshing, the plot (so far) horribly relatable- and I literally know nothing about this book or where it’s going, but it’s officially gotten me out of my reading slump.

I have so many questions???
Is it their child that they call monkey, or a real monkey??? Because I’m leaning towards thinking it’s a real monkey that can talk due to “the zone”…
Also were we supposed to care about Burbridge? Because at no point was I remotely sympathetic (also I tried to just look past it but I’m pretty sure this book has some racist stereotypes, since so far the portrayal has been awful

OKAY im not really sure if I like the writing or not? Red’s character is written (or translated) in a way that makes his characterization contradict (I understand character depth- which I feel like that’s what they’re going for- but it just reads kinda off)? That being said, the story is still really enjoyable with its fear and tragedy.

I absolutely love parts of this book so far- the descriptions of fear and paranoia are honestly really well done.

I'm so glad I'm finally am able to read a print version of this book! The foreword is so interesting and while I don't really care about the characters (yet) the zone is truly unsettling.

"Larry" couldn't be me- losing absolutely everything(job, education, friends, etc.) to the religion of whiteness and still having his faith intact- insane. like, actually- how can you believe in God, when time and time again life has shown you nothing but hurt for supporting the real faith?

I'm not dogin' on what others believe, but it has been one of the many reasons I've always struggled with "Christianity"

"If you are perceived as threatening it (whiteness), you will suffer consequences. It is hard not to see this as a demonic force."

Even though I am not particularly religious (for many reasons including trauma)- I cannot reiterate THIS point enough. What they are preaching isn't the same message as the bible- it is wrong, it is finding community in the persecution of others- it is distinctly un-Christian.

Fern is a piece of shit. I understand there isn’t much you can do, but LITERALLY DO ANYTHING- ANYTHING TO GET THAT PEDOPHILE AWAY FROM HOLLY.

These are really impossible choices, but I like that “fern” at least gave a hint to who she is.

I’m not sure if I’m liking this book or not. I’m not sure where it’s heading, but I do want to know what happens

That was a bit much for me personally.

Rose was right. Right about everything.

Somethings don't need to be said or described. Holly's experience is horrific enough. We- the reader, Fern- don't need to be wondering or describing the rape that happened to a child- that has already been explained plenty. It just feels gross along with many other things in this book.

Despite the title- the way this book was going, I did not expect witchcraft. But it's here, and I am here for it.

If the librarian's reaction is anything to go by these girls are in such a bad situation.

Fern finally gets it. It took seeing someone experiencing it to finally understand they have been lied to. That she has been lied to- by every single person she knows.

This book is racist and I’m not sure if it’s the author or just writing the characters that way but it’s not pleasant to put it lightly
