I have so many questions???
Is it their child that they call monkey, or a real monkey??? Because I’m leaning towards thinking it’s a real monkey that can talk due to “the zone”…
Also were we supposed to care about Burbridge? Because at no point was I remotely sympathetic (also I tried to just look past it but I’m pretty sure this book has some racist stereotypes, since so far the portrayal has been awful

OKAY im not really sure if I like the writing or not? Red’s character is written (or translated) in a way that makes his characterization contradict (I understand character depth- which I feel like that’s what they’re going for- but it just reads kinda off)? That being said, the story is still really enjoyable with its fear and tragedy.

I absolutely love parts of this book so far- the descriptions of fear and paranoia are honestly really well done.

I'm so glad I'm finally am able to read a print version of this book! The foreword is so interesting and while I don't really care about the characters (yet) the zone is truly unsettling.

"Larry" couldn't be me- losing absolutely everything(job, education, friends, etc.) to the religion of whiteness and still having his faith intact- insane. like, actually- how can you believe in God, when time and time again life has shown you nothing but hurt for supporting the real faith?

I'm not dogin' on what others believe, but it has been one of the many reasons I've always struggled with "Christianity"

Even though I am not particularly religious (for many reasons including trauma)- I cannot reiterate THIS point enough. What they are preaching isn't the same message as the bible- it is wrong, it is finding community in the persecution of others- it is distinctly un-Christian.

Fern is a piece of shit. I understand there isn’t much you can do, but LITERALLY DO ANYTHING- ANYTHING TO GET THAT PEDOPHILE AWAY FROM HOLLY.

These are really impossible choices, but I like that “fern” at least gave a hint to who she is.

I’m not sure if I’m liking this book or not. I’m not sure where it’s heading, but I do want to know what happens

So now you’re questioning things Fern? It’s the same thing- you’re just concerned about optics.

That was a bit much for me personally.

Rose was right. Right about everything.

Somethings don't need to be said or described. Holly's experience is horrific enough. We- the reader, Fern- don't need to be wondering or describing the rape that happened to a child- that has already been explained plenty. It just feels gross along with many other things in this book.

Despite the title- the way this book was going, I did not expect witchcraft. But it's here, and I am here for it.

If the librarian's reaction is anything to go by these girls are in such a bad situation.

Fern finally gets it. It took seeing someone experiencing it to finally understand they have been lied to. That she has been lied to- by every single person she knows.

This book is racist and I’m not sure if it’s the author or just writing the characters that way but it’s not pleasant to put it lightly

That social worker makes me so mad- she knows exactly what she's doing waiting for Fern to be extra vulnerable then acting like she's on her side, manipulating her into doing exactly what they (her father, the Home) want her to do. Never giving her any time to decide for herself.

While I know "Fern" isn't really fond of "Rose"- I am. I love her sass and bluntness. Life is suffering so you better get used to it.

Wow. Her parents (no, her entire family) are complete trash. Not educating their kid and only teaching abstinence to just abandon them when they get pregnant. Not even educating her of what childbirth is going to be like since she's here now- this is why I can't stand not having basic education in the school systems- it's stuff EVERYONE needs to know.

The writing is really good and has me sat, but the subject of pregnancy in general makes me extremely squeamish (body horror that I can't handle because it's real)- but the fact that it's teen pregnancy on top of all that is horrific. She knows nothing. Was taught nothing of sex ed or how having a baby works.

the story already disturbing with the imagery of biting off chicken heads told in such a nostalgic way- the good ol' days. I just wish I liked the writing better, but I can tell I'll get wrapped up into the story nonetheless.
