I'm so happy to be done this war/military reading arc!
The exhaustion of reading about the exhaustion of resources and human lives, with the paranoia that writing reviews that are critical of certain nations actions may end up causing retaliatory harm to myself.

Now, time to read a cozy book about being an independent and investigative mind that I started years ago! Then to more books not about wanton politics, ahah

Meaningless is 40% done with The Prophet (Deluxe Hardbound Edition)
After the introduction, the prophetizing ramble reads like an edited and structured form of stream-of-consciousness writing, with a issue/subject-to-solution/resolution approach. I've done some writing like this, and it's all flowery and sounds really wise, but I'm unsure if it's as deep as we like to pretend it is, though it can be calming and interesting to think about and read.
I'm liking this lil breather book :)

Just picked back up this book, and wow! It hits differently now!
I liked it, wanted to like it, and did somewhat like it when I first started, but my mood wasn't into it back then.
Now, I quickly read through over 50 pages today!
The core messages of the book is everything I wanted to hear.
It makes me so happy that a book like this has become so popular :)
I relate to most of her ideas, and expand on some <3

Out of the other 6, this is my favorite BISE book I am currently entrenched in. It weaves many concepts of historical setting of the poem, poetic techniques, the poem's main message and story(s), and its cultural impact together.
The use of long quotes at the top or bottom of its pages is a great unique feature to this BISE book, as it allows me to go full character vocalization with immersion!

This was a book I did not expect to enjoy as much I do! Detailing these historical laws that directed society and which influenced modern ones, for whatever reasons strikes a chord in my core-self. I feel like I'm gaining a better understanding of historical phases, and philosophical ideas better than reading other similar NF books before.

I don't know why I can't get fully engrossed in this book, yet. It seems to be exactly what I want to read about, and the writing is even really good, but something about it feels all too much for me to fit in my head. Surely its not the source material, I've greedily read more intellectually slavish works with fervor.

This is a fine book, but what I think it STRONGLY lacks is the immersion in the stories, in contrast to DK's BISE: Poetry Book, which I feel like does a great job at this!
Instead, this book seems to focus more on laying out the groundwork of the setting and era that lead to the creation and celebration of these works of literature.
Thus, these two DK books seem to compliment each other in coverage!

The issue I have of this book is gaining a bearing on what is surrounding the scene of Conan Doyle('s time) and that of Sherlock's Victorian era. He jambs in so much references to other people and books, that non of it really makes much sense!! Maybe it'll read like a Sherlock Holmes book, where the strands start to make sense and the bigger picture is revealed??
He just does a bad job setting the scene of intrigue!

SO GOOD! AHHH!
I feel so seen and understood by these anthropologists!
For a long time I try to bring up my opinions about culture/society through a anthropological sense to my friends and family, but they lay unconvinced.
Theorizing about how societies are governed is MY THING!
Exploring this science of humanity is sooooo fascinating to me!
AGH! :D

Though I started off perky to read this book, it's been a challenge to dive deep into for reasons of celibacy. I've had one sexual encounter 7 years ago, and it nearly caused me to off myself.
Sex is and the lewd is something I can be squeamish about,
which is, however, one of the reasons I thought it was a good idea to read this book in the first place, so that I can work through this internal struggle :P

After reading Careening into the Headlights on p. 91, my heart just couldn't take reading this book anymore! It's too painful. I felt anger, sorrow, and grief; I could see a bit of myself in Kevin Henry's story, though I'm 100% white bred.
I may be mistaken, but I'm looking to read The LGBTQ+ History Book, as at least my heart can find some love and happiness before the arrival of Christianity to take it all away X_X

I'm returning to this book after having to read through and dissect some of it in my English 12 class 3 years ago.
It's hard reading through these stories...
they're sad and hurtful.
The pain of centuries and recent decades of racism really shines through these pages, bleeding into my heart.
I can only work through a few stories before I have to pause and take a break from this heartbreak.

What's so great about feminist writers is that they're so punchy and provocative in their damn writing! Using terms and phrases like, "spermicide," "the wicked womb," and "'aggressive conquistatorial power,' which reduces heterosexuality to a sadomasochistic pattern" that makes me shut up and listen/read.
Talking about clitorial pleasures and Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell! XD really good stuff!

Feminist history is so damn interesting in the tactics they use to be heard and claim their autonomy and equality. From terrorism to lewd or intellectual art and books.
I'm rooting for them along the way!
I believe in their vision and a future of respectful collaboration of the other half of the human species <3

This is nearly a complete a complete work of the ancient mythologies/religions. The most notable is the absence of Sikhism; lesser absences include Islamism, then Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism.
I'm okay with that, as I think he accomplished well what he intended, it's more so a note of curiosity for myself.
This is probably one of my favorite books I've read this year! :)

My copy of the book is 236, not 268 pages long, but there was no other option in 'editions of the book' that best described my copy of it.
I am really enjoying/digging this book, even after all my criticisms.
I really like his writing, how he presents the information, and his use of humor that doesn't disappear from almost every chapter.
The chapter on Kama Sutra... I WAS NOT READY FOR IT!
P. 146 had me cry-laughing!

I wonder if my reading apprehension would've been enhanced if I read the previous 3 books in his Ancient Wisdom series?
He's been pumping out tons of books since like the early 2000s for what seems to be a decent author career, which is great to see, but I wonder if his hasty rate of publication means that quantity has trumped quality?
This book is one his most recent, but glaringly lacks fundamental polish.

My main critiques of this book so far: blurry map of India, as it dampens my understanding of its story and people, and no Index to refer back to where foreign words first appear and are defined.

Otherwise, Neel Burton is funny and easy to follow along. He keeps the pace moving, providing a good chunk of quotes and comparisons, to the point that it makes sense there isn't a reference section at the back of the book.

I just can't with this book right now.
There is so many weirdly pronounced names and funny stories in intro section numbered by Roman numerals, it's flushed my brain of coherency.
BAMM! Here's a new funny name to twist your tongue.
BAMB! Here's a short story how the god, Vishnu, "hugged" an anti-god "hard" enough into submission.
This book is too much for me right now...
I just wish its images were more visible!!!

This has been another incredible journey!
Who knew there were two African countries founded to give a home to the previously enslaved?
As a Canadian, I had no idea about the destructive American Jim Crow laws.
1960 is the year of Africa!
I am loving how beautiful, colorful, natural, and elegantly stylized traditionally dressed African women are, and snazzy the men are.
The story of Africa is worth telling more about!

While reading this, I find myself talking about it more to people in my life about Islam. Yes, it was founded on conquest to convert and survive, and yes there are some troubling passages in the Quran, but it was a lot more progressive for its time than Christianity and can be very welcoming of others, a lot more tolerant than Catholicism; we just see the worst of it in the media.
Very good educational material!

I like how this book identifies black historical identity as that from a human evolutionary perspective. Rarely do I read a history book, even from DK, that starts off talking about human kind before we became Homo sapiens.
It pits black identity counter to the racist white Christian one.
I'm eager to learn further about what happened on this wide continent! :)

And that is what's so remarkable about it!

I'm not used to reading poetry.
There were times, in the last few years where I was immensely into writing poetry.
I think the only other works of poetry I've read was Thus Spoke Zarathustra, some random school poems, and a few Shakespearian plays...

Learning about human history, a passion of mine, is incomplete when I don't know how our bodies and species evolved and came into existence.
Reading this book will hopefully fill those gaps, as I delve into a deeper understanding of why things are the way they are.

I am loving this book so far! Not overwhelmed with tons of new names, terms, and places. It is masterful story telling. Blending fiction to describe NF.
