I am reading this book out of sequence, choosing the chapters based on interest. I've read Mind Weeds, The Marrow of Zen,Believing in Nothing and Attachment, Non-attachment. Best chapter out of the four I've read was Mind Weeds, about how we can use our insignificant thoughts to nourish the significant ones. Like burying dead weeds next to a plant as compost.

Conversations with Bhagavan Sathya Sai Baba, is a series of interviews. I just read that milk is fine for human consumption, in Sai Baba's spiritual opinion because humans have been drinking milk for 10,000 years.

Reading the chapter called Practice, about Zazen. According to Joko Beck its about the self, meditation, is not about anything outside of the self.

Read three chapters last night, Go, Death and Sex and Sin. The chapter on death was an interesting read, he talks about his interest in lots of different religions in his younger days. He then talks about Dogen's view of death which is that even inanimate objects are born, die and are reborn as something else. 'A stone is chipped off a mountain, it is born, then the elements wear it into sand and it becomes sand'

I'm getting a bit bored with the prose I am on in this part of the book, I enjoyed the historical story of the Buddha. I also enjoyed reading the moral codes for Buddhist monks. Although I was surprised at the vow of celibacy and also the sexist law of not talking about Dharma to a woman in more than 5 words. I am now on the chapter doctrinal disputes. The book is hard to read, and old fashioned.

I've read 10 chapters of this book, but I'm reading out of sequence. Brad Warner seems to be a good Zen teacher, although he might not describe himself as one. He does call himself a Zen priest and master, but does not claim to be enlightened. His teacher is the long dead Dogen, a 12 th century Japanese Zen Monk. Brad Warner gets most of his inspiration from the Shobogenzo Dogen's 95 chapter book of Zen.

I'm finding the book quite promising now. Maybe I will become a Buddha in just 5 weeks, I hope so. I have just covered the 5 points of the noble eight fold path, which are control of the mind, presence in reality, awareness of change, non-attachment and universal love.

This book is like a business manual, it has bullet points. Its seems unlikely that I will become a Buddha by reading it. It recommends that you work on each of the five chapters on Buddhist precepts a week at a time, after you have read the whole thing. Never say never though. Its written by a psychotherapist, like If You Meet The Buddha On The Road ,Kill Him by Sheldon B Kopp. I'm enjoying it so far so good.
