I appreciate getting the scoop on how these stories (Vietnam atrocities as My Lai massacre, CIA assassination as Allende,..., +domestic wire-tapping, and Watergate + that Nixon hit his wife, the latte never published before) were broken by Hersh.

Just finishing chapter 4 and, for me, this is likely a 5 star read.

This is good. But hard not to be sad & despairing at the details of ugly history I’d only heard of topically + the depraved nature of US agencies which lie & advance horrors (CBW, Vietnam). Maybe if things were radically different now it’d be easier but decades string together the same old power players begetting new one + new lies & horrors. Except....where are the Seymour Hersh’s of today?

I’ll add that our 9 year old is enthralled by this, book 2, as she was with TGC, book 1; the same was reported by my 8 year old nephew. Despite the change-up of character narrative it is an intriguing story and I’ll finish the series, which seems to me is smarter and more honest than others.

I’m disappointed that this is a snooze fest for me compared to TGC. I want Lyra as the center lead. It doesn’t help that Will is a bit of a shit. I still appreciate the threaded content of science.

In various forms and in different spaces I keep coming across this: perhaps we humans don’t need HOPE but instead GRIEF to do what is necessary. Will ‘We’ do what is necessary? Down in my gut, here in my heart, and deep in my bones I don’t know that we will and to my head that is...incomprehensible, for one. I’m willing to attend to my own grief. I’m willing to be in community. I’m willing to take the actions I can.

Pulls back the curtain to offer a glimpse of real life incl. conflicts & flaws. Refreshing. Naturally a memoir aims to put her in a favorable light yet I believe it genuine that MO has never approached her various jobs & or roles w/ a sense of entitlement instead applying a strict work ethic & striving to be worthy of the honor(s).
