The writing is still extremely juvenile - like something out of a teeanger's diary and it's cringe - but at least the parts that aren't a recap of the previous books (aka, the very beginning before Island shows up) are entertaining as well as cringe so there is that.

Yes, tell me all about 7 YEAR OLD GRIM BEING AN LITTLE ANGSTY LORD GROWING INTO A MASSIVE EMO BITCH WHILE IGNORING ALL THE INCONSISTENCIES, PLOT HOLES, AND DUMB FUCKING WRITING.

As long as these books are, reading them just flies by because there is NO THOUGHT NEEDED WHATSOEVER. It's like reading fucking Air

I'm trying to decide if I want to continue with this or not.

It feels like most of the 'plot' is concluded, just waiting for Siiri to get to the underworld now and it's just... meh

I kinda want to know how it ends but it's the same kind of desire as 'I started watching this crappy for TV movie and nothing else is on so might as well finish it' kinda feeling.

Not looking good so far.

The pace is breakneck, something I remember not liking before, but also she's doing the 'This is a retelling but I'm COMPLETELY CHANGING THE CHARACTERS INSTEAD OF JUST THE STORY' that pisses me off.

If you're going to change the character's personalities, just write a new story all together.

I've read one of Kiersten White's books before and I did NOT like it.

But I like vampires and the cover looks awesome, so I'll give this a try.

Every time I'd remember to get back and finish this, I just didn't. I finally picked it back up and I just don't care.

Is this ghostwritten?

Because so far there are no absurd tangents, there's no random scenes thrown in for the DRAMAS, the purple prose is a bit more lilac than violet, and while there's still a focus on relationships, the characters are given a bit more room to breath.

In other words; There's no way Clare is writing this.

10% in and we've introduced an absurd amount of characters, established the beginnings of a FEW love triangles, and already counteracting previously established lore.

At least she TRIED to give a reason for why guns don't work but it still doesn't pass the sniff test.

Also, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET. At least not actiony. We just have character/relationships being established and it's actually not that soulcrushing.

As of writing this, this is the only ShadowHunter series I have left to read. I'm not counting the short story fanfic books she had other people write for her and I think there's a book or two that's just Magnus and Alec and since I hate that pairing, I'm not going to torture myself THAT much.

She's finally written something NOT Shadowhunter so I might have to read that one at some point.

Okay, this book was already on pretty thin ice but that whole Hedotis BS just destroyed this book for me.

It was pointless, relied on a deus ex machina plot twist that was infuriating, and Yarros is apparently one of those people who doesn't know what 'Wisdom' means.

Here's a hint Yarros: 'Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad'.

This is a hate read from now on.

OH, yeah, this is definitely taking a downward turn.

Taking out this whole Cat plot point would have made this book 50% better. Checking the egos at the door would do it another 25%.

It really doesn't take much to suck the enjoyment out of something.

What I liked about the first book is that it avoided a lot of the 'Annoying Characters' that litter YA/NA books.
That's gone now.

A lot of plot devices are a bit TOO convenient (which is saying something) and basically ALL the riders have been sniffing their own farts and declare it to be roses.

I just really want a gryphon to kick a dragon's ass but I know it's not going to happen

I'm liking it so far.

I definitely see the worldbuilding issues people have with it: Mainly the whole 'why are you killing so many of your own soldiers' BS and the 'Of course the very rare special dragon(s) like the MC'.

But this is also YA/NA - It's fantasy wish fulfillment and an effort is being made to make suspension of disbelief possible.

But I'm not even halfway so we'll see how it goes...

Welp, going from one disappointingly bad book to a book I know will be bad.

I also can't help but think a good lawyer would rip a lot of these characters assholes into shreds for even thinking about doing some of the shady business stuff they do.

This is starting to get ridiculous now.

Almost every 'twist' is introduced a chapter or so before and then suddenly expanded on in the next chapter. There's no time to breath, no extra hints that the reader can dwell on. Just plopped down in front of you without any preamble.

This is just a guess but I'm thinking Hendrix is a pantser when it comes to writing.

Lynnette's walking the border of interesting and annoying.

On one hand, it makes some sense that she'd be paranoid but on the other... do you have to go into so much detail about it? And some of the safety precautions are just absurd to me.

But the book is also building up my suspension of disbelief: 'Yeah, it's a bit silly but just keep imagining this takes place in a horror movie universe.'

I'm only one chapter in and I'm not digging it.

The prose so far is very empty while also being very pretentious. So many words to say nothing.

A kitten appeared out of nowhere and while I appreciate that in real life, to just randomly having a kitten there was jarring.

And I do mean it appeared out of nowhere: No lead up, no curious 'oh, what is that'. No, the kitten is just there, no questions asked.

I don't like how the family treats Thor. I know insult nicknames can be just as loving (my favorite nickname for my old chonky cat Paris was 'fatass') but I just don't sense any fondness in them.

But also, this asshole THREW THE DOG DOWN THE STAIRS. Yeah, he gave the kid a warning bite but the kid had been teasing him for months and was actively blocking him from 'his job'.

Movie's an improvement.

Might be my medication but I was just unreasonable sad for the bear.

LET'S FUCKING GO

Okay so there's a cheesy werewolf movie called Bad Moon. The acting leaves something to be desired but the werewolf costume/effects are AMAZING and one of my favorites.

Now, I don't know if the movie is based on this book or if the book is a novelizaton of the movie. Either way, I'm very excited.

I'm probably going to go on a werewolf reading spree and this is number one baby!

I'm about 30% is so far... the main character has a new dress.

Okay, a bit disingenuous: She was kidnapped from her dirt hovel by her kinda childhood friend, they were attacked, she took a bath, and then she got a new dress. Also some tidbits of backstory.

It feels like reading fanfiction but not even good fanfiction. And there's no Shassie in sight.

Reading this because I did a Psych rewatch earlier this year.

Not sure I'm going to like the books but they're also fairly short reads...
