I have been waiting 958 pages to get to "The Loss of Power" section of this book. Please, karmic justice, beat this man into the dirt. I need some schadenfreude to get through this home stretch!

I am going to burn this man to the ground in my review. Please look forward to it.

I feel like the entirety of this book can be summed up by :
Moses : Here sign this piece of paper that says I can do anything I want as long as I'm not a dick.
Politicians : ok
Moses : *acts like a dick*
P : Wait but you said you wouldn't be a dick?
Moses : Check again -- it says I can't BE a dick. it says nothing about me ACTING like a dick even though I'm a great person. Checkmate!

RIP, La Guardia, the only mayor who could even get close to keeping a leash on Moses. This is about to get a whole lot worse, I can tell :-(

Me : *rejoicing when someone finally sticks a finger in Moses' eye.
Robert Caro : but here's why that actually wasn't a win, because nobody except the friggin President had the power to stick that finger.

Way to be a buzzkill, Robert (Caro, not Moses, who is a buzzkill all the time and therefore doesn't need a special callout).

You know how you can spot a red flag by watching how your date treats the waiter? It's like Moses stitched himself a whole suit made out of red flags.

I was promised Burgundian fiscal policy and so far this has not been delivered.

As others have said : Snow is great, more of her please. And if that comes at the expense of having less Bao ... well, that sounds like a win win to me.

I'm suspecting that we're playing with double timelines in this book.

I am disoriented and confused, but I think that's actually the point Haasse was going for (replicating the claustrophobic malaise of being in prison), so ... props? I feel like Robin Williams in Jumanji - WHAT YEAR IS IT??

The fact that this book feels the need to let me know that when they say livres, they mean livres tournois, not livres parisis, says to me that they badly misunderstand/underestimate their target audience...but I kinda love them for that. Bless your heart Richard, of course it's l.t.

Welp, into the part everyone else complained about now...

University libraries + interlibrary loan are the best!!
