"There were days when I was content in the role I played within the House, to stay behind the screen and provide pleasant accompaniment. Then there were days when I felt like I should step out into the garden and stand under the open sky and scream at all of the rules that governed my existence, like hands placed around my throat, slowly choking me."

based on the sheer number of utterly dumb decisions made by characters in the book (Nikolai gets a prize for first place), I'm astounded this many are still alive and almost hope the Darkling destroys everything. here's hoping the Crows + Nina can salvage the rest of this book.

Fact check: purple martins don't live in the UK but are mentioned here. I doubt anyone will notice, but as a birdwatcher this detail bugged me.

Chapter 24 is distinctly reminiscent of the Mines of Moria... and all this info-dumping in conversations between characters and flashbacks/dreams is tiring. And none of the settings are fleshed out AT ALL. I have no image in my mind what any of these 800 places characters have been to look or feel like.

Started slow but picked up around ch4. Ch 6 was straight up Inn of the Prancing Pony. It is not clear to me why the Gifted are so hated and why becoming a Shadow is so bad if you don't have any magic anyway? Hopefully it becomes clearer...

I'm disappointed because so far, this book makes absolutely no sense to me. We have a pacifist society with no army but a militia headed by a General? Sounds like an army to me. This makes NO sense unless that's the point.
Hesina trusts a criminal on the basis of a sooth's vision of the future alone? This just...doesn't make sense either seeing as the sooths appear to be outlawed.

I just got to Part IV and I have mixed thoughts on this book.
Its good, but... tiny detail but 1. it bugged me when Roos looks out at the stars at night while its raining. Er, what?
2. too much time spent in Inys with Sabran & Ead. I'd like more Tane, please.
3. A lot of convenient rescue and world building popping up randomly without ever being mentioned before to save our characters from peril.

So here is what I don't get. Why didn't they just burn or destroy the scrolls if they are so dangerous in the wrong hands?

Not loving this one. Its very dryly written, more like reading a diary. "We sailed on a ship past places x, y,x, the ship looked like ___. We landed for a day in [city[. Then we moved on." Except more lengthy and descriptive and literally nothing happens. way too much telling. no showing.

So far, its my opinion that this really isn't very well-written. Though I don't tend to read many novellas/short stories.

Liked the first one but finding this one quite tedious. Its not making me want to stay up at night and I'm thinking of other things while reading it. never a good sign. getting tired of "the chosen one" being mentioned every other page...

Not loving it like I did Beyond a Darkened Shore. 2 things that bugged me around the 1/2 mark: Kharan already told Katya her tribe hunts with eagles, but when its mentioned again, Katya seems to have forgotten. Continuity error? When Sasha and Katya discuss sharing a tent and he says he knows she isn't "that kind" of maiden..implying that a girl who would sleep with him in a negative light. Not a fan of this!
