Cast additions were tiring and at times dull but now they all have had value. I enjoy saleh and how he was written as a physician. At first from the side characters i only really liked the rabbi that took the golem in but now each cast member has something of true interest and enjoyment.

The recurring theme of the negative side and reasons for marriage is eh to read.. but am into this part of the wizard who shackled him to finally be shown more of.. also the smithing scenes and the whole miscarriage part were good to read incl the jinni and golem helping each other and reflections on acceptable human sin and emotional flood being unforgivable for the golem even if out of self-defense/prot and loyalty

the tension pacing is really good

also the ppl actually being competent and science nerds and (therefore probably lol, i say this positively) coming with social quirks and some inappropriateness esp when interacting w the more socially adept/trained manager types - but all valuing people in this hopecore scifi book - is both entertaining and charming and why did i not pick this up earlier.. scifi is such a gem genre

honestly i was very dubious about giving this 5* even though i was enjoying it a /lot/. but now, with even the non-log entries being fun and feeling like real people, i don't know what i could gripe about. yes, the lil exposition/explanation bits about the Hab were a bit dry, but they were needed to understand the catastrophic rip that happened... and introducing characters just for that or sth would be worse. so hm

The most hopecore scifi thing about this really is the world despite budgets etc banding together to rescue one astronaut.
Side note: watney turning out to have an inappropriate sense of humour is too real.. also 'ayyyyy!' Annie mocked. (Why would he do this?) 'have you /met/ watney?' May be my fav lines in the book yet lmao
