The hero, a persona of the author lives in an illusion of glory and self-importance. He despises what he cannot understand while he is completely ignorant of the real historical situation of his times. Death saved him from realising the extent of his illusion and insignificance.

Friedrich Nietzsche has always been a bad influence on Greek literature with pretensions of philosophical depth (Kazantzakis, Dragoumis). The mixture of nitzscheanism and naive idealistic nationalism with a hint of archaic rural misogyny, is quite unbearable.

Verbosity. Main character highly detestable. Pathetic and boring secondary characters. The English landed gentry at it's worst, silly, boring and proud without good reason. Maybe the heroine is immature but too many pages wasted to express her immaturity and lack of intellect.

For more than twenty years I've been avoiding reading this.
