I get it now--this is futuristic Attack on Titan. Protagonist has long monologues about determination and has an unbelievable talent to convince others to do dangerous shit

So what this series has done so far: break the protagonist down to nothing and have him painfully overcome and rise spectacularly, break him again, have him eventually rise even more spectacularly, break him again, have him limp around for a bit and then break him again. It's stress-testing of a character, and that's a pretty effective narrative tool. The pacing is still snappy but I'm not that enticed yet.

Already I know I'm going to like this. Exactly as advertised: high fantasy, low stakes. It has the feel of "that writing project your friend wrote for fun", so I don’t expect for it to have that much of a profound world or deep plot, just a warm feeling of connection (which rules).

I went from slighlty bored wondering when that slow research-segment (where there's also somehow more group dramas than at a high school) would end, to figuratively wetting my pants what the hell Tchaikovsky that's what we call not having chill (such good action sequences, man)

The amount of times 'bot has thought "whatever" so far is in the hundreds. It's like an annoyed and emotionally stunted teenager in that sense, but it aligns with it's current arc so I can’t be mad about it. Until now everything has been tensionbuilding but now we're getting to the heart of the story hot damn

Catch me throwing all other books to the side NEW MURDERBOT! Might be the first time I read something the first day upon release. Was a bit jarring to jump right back in where the last book ended but I'll get into it

Keeping up with the tradition to read one christmas-themed book each holiday season. This is fairly well-written and heartfelt so far!

A side character in a same-sex marriage with kids, treated as completely normal! I mentioned I distrust gruff military sci-fi (mostly based on Hollywood movies, I'll be honest), but I am definitely warming up to this!

Enough sci-fi thinkpieces for a while now. Next audiobook is this; a pretty straightforward military space opera with a gruff veteran getting slung into intergalactic politics through a mystery plot. I kind of expected casual sexism because I usually don't trust these kinds of books easily, but so far pretty much none of that! I'm kind of enjoying myself tbh

Whacky and lighthearted and quite reminiscent of the Wax and Wayne-series in comedic dialogue style, but written in first person. Works but doesn't feel as focused, in a sense? It has the Sanderson charm I've come to expect. It isn't one of his epics, but I don’t think it's supposed to be. It is so easy to read. I'll devour it, probably

My first K. Le Guin! Ever since reading Rendevouz w Rama and the Boobs In Space-monologue I've been a bit scared of classic sci fi. This one leans on discussing human nature and political systems and ideology and not so many heavy science ponderings and it's done in a poignant way and my heart hurts a little.

This started out fine, then it got messy, then it turned into an unfocused plot hole party (why didn't they cuff her to begin with if that was a more secure way to do it?). Character actions are made Because Plot

Listening to the new audiobook. The narrator is annoyingly loud at times and I had forgotten how dreadfully boring I find the Tom Bombadil subplot (it comes out of nowhere and leads nowhere, I sleep). It is a bit funny to have a godlike creature just chill and sing and hang out with his wife, but it sure drags the plot. Otherwise a masterpiece in slow pacing and immersion
