I’m only in the early chapters of The Handmaid’s Tale, settling into Gilead’s routines. I noticed that dialogue often appears without quotation marks. At first I thought I was overthinking, but it mirrors the world itself: people aren’t allowed to speak freely. The writing reflects that restriction it’s less about conversation and more about memory, thought, and the muted, controlled voice of the narrator.
