Well, I'm definitely here for the prose. Really hoping this isn't a grieving-widower-reminisces-about-a-woman-that-ISN'T-his-dead-wife book.

That unicorn chapter makes me want to reread "A Glory of Unicorns".

Admittedly, I've never been big into werewolves, but I didn't know they had major origins in French folklore. Wolf predation was a Big Issue in Medieval France, so it makes sense, but I really appreciate the way the author explores those connections here.

Okay. I am struggling with this narrator, but I am determined to get to the dang island. I've got, like, 20 more pages. If, once we're there, I still find myself struggling, I'll dnf.

I'm going to have to read Huckleberry Finn after this, aren't I?

Predictably, I started drafting my next book and my reading flow has turned to a trickle. Still, I'm enjoying my time with this one.

Well, I liked the scene where she remembers being on the island. But, she was there for all of 20 minutes, and she's in her 30s and still actively traumatized by the experience? There's just... so many feelings happening and I don't really believe any of them? I would like this to hurry up and get to the island again.

I recognize that I would probably get much much more from this book if I'd ever read Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer... but I am still deeply into this narration so far.

Read the first little bit of this for some research, and really liked it, so I'm going to switch to audiobook in a week or so. Taking a break but leaving it on "currently reading" for now.

I'm not totally bought into why Ellie is so traumatized by her experience with the island as a twelve year old. Like... she's in her 30s now and it still seems like an active wound? I'm struggling to connect with the character so far, but it's very early. I have to at least get to the Island and Clay before I give up.

When I checked out this book, I didn't intend to read the whole thing, but once I opened it I just... Found it so charming? I'm going through this slowly, but really enjoying it.
