Almost at the halfway point, and so far the protagonist Rin has been too stupid to live too many times to count. She seems to have zero agency and no brain. And no heart. Not sure what happened to the MC from book one, but I really regret spending money on this volume.

After getting through about 40 hours of this 66 hour audiobook the urge to bookmark and highlight passages became too much for me and I bought the 4 lb paperback, lol.

Amazingly, meticulously, thoroughly researched. If you think you made a secret deal, you'd better hope Robert Caro isn't planning to write about you, lol.

Some of the throwaway irony in this book is delicious:

"Have more confidence," Weniat said. This had the opposite of the desired effect.

Just realized that MacMillan is embargoing library ebooks - limiting libraries to buying one copy of new ebooks. Lot of libraries are boycotting MacMillan ebooks, but not my library, the NYPL. I've decided to have my own small boycott and not buy any more MacMillan books or ebooks until their library embargo ends.

Am loving the audible reading by Gary Sinise. The pacing and intonation is wonderful.

I'm dubious about this footnote device in fiction - at first it had a freshness, but it's getting a bit tiresome peering at the small print at the bottom of nearly every page, taking me out of the narrative.

My main problem so far is that every plan cooked up by the protagonist is half-assed and incompetent.

I think I've been stuck on this last story for so long because I simply don't want the book to end.

I'm biased because this adorable little hardcover is so tactilely pleasing to hold and read. Good paper, beautiful typeface.

And lovely lyrical meditations on the nature of time that are backed by elegant physics equations in the notes. Think I'm going to enjoy this! Also really tempted to buy the audio version as it's read by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Falling back into this completely addictive writing. I haven't read anything by this author since the sublime Last Samurai and have missed this. She needs to write more!

The audio narration of this book is excellent. Appealing voice, character variation, great pacing.

Aaaand he's also prejudiced against short overweight people. Decided not to get to know a woman better because she was "four foot tall and nearly spherical". Also, apparently King Rufus was "no great loss" because he was short and fat. This doesn't feel at all like the Bryson from earlier books.

When did Bill Bryson become a cranky mean spirited old man? So far he's bullied a McDonald's clerk, an H&M clerk, made fun of American girls for being unfit, and just sounds all-around whiny and complaining. The narration's not great, but I really think it's Bryson that's gone downhill...

Bought this because it's fanfic author skoosiepants's work, and I really like her short Sterek fics. So far so good!

I hesitated to start this because the final book isn't out, but the last one ended on a cliffie, so I felt compelled. Maybe I'll just read to a place where I'm comfortable putting it down..

This author has a knack for making dire psychological straits hilarious...
