I don't know about this one. I am trying very hard to finish everything I begin, but if I have to see the word "chamber" for room or cave one more time I might have to attack someone. Thesaurus.

Yeah, being lesbian is a joke. Don't take veganism seriously. As long as you can be yourself, who cares what suffering you cause?

Yes, fake Margot Frank, we KNOW your sweater sticks to you like a skin you will never remove. We know Joshua has chestnut curls (never just hair). The grammar, the repetition! Why am I still reading this??

I don't know if I will be able to finish this book. I've read some of the other reviews, and they point to potential issues I'm already having at this stage, but the grammar! I can't remember what it's called when you write something like "my religion, it's..." - referring right back to the subject with the word "it," but that type of thing has happened so far 3 times. It's extremely irritating. Bathroom, perhaps?

gads, if Maisie does anything else quickly, I'm going to scream. The word is so overused. Also, people need to stop "taking up" utensils, document cases, and other items. Mostly I just feel disappointed because I like everyone else in the novel BUT Maisie. She sure has forgotten her roots. What a snob.

I'm so glad I'm re-reading this. It is sooo good!!! This novel should be reissued.

Um, this is interesting and readable and also very annoying. It's 20 years old, and that might have something to do with it, but Faderman keeps suggesting that gayness is not inherent. I haven't gotten to the part yet where she suggests that it's always a choice -- at this point she seems keen on proclaiming lesbianism is really a feminist choice to equalize women with men. The history's fascinating; the rest - no.

This isn't a bad book, though I'm having some difficulty with it. The main characters are actually sympathetic enough, a feat I haven't come across in the last couple novels I read, but the writing seems almost as if it's trying too hard. Many of the characters have the annoying trait of ending declarative sentences with question marks? And the overuse of italics for emphasis has grown old by this point.

Slow going because it's a little dense, and I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the issues. Also, when books start to talk about economics, I zone out. This one takes some concentration but it is, I think, really important.

Well, I got stalled when I came to the part about eating an apple mindfully, AKA: pay attention to it. Eat when you are doing nothing else. No TV, no books, nothing but you and the apple. I love to read while I eat (which is why I need this book). So maybe one day soon I'll eat an apple mindfully, just me and her, and progress in this book. (And my food issues)

Oh man, this is exactly the kind of book I love reading most. I have been doing a lot of required reading and looking with desire upon this one while I do what I must. I'd have finished it by now if I hadn't had all this other stuff to do.

To take best advantage of this book, I do the exercises. But the most recent exercise -- returning for several days or a week to the same spot in nature to observe it, quietly -- happened to come when the weather changed. It's just too cold to sit in front of my evergreen tree when I'm freezing, brr. So it's on hold til the warm weather comes back. :)

Struggling through the introduction. Some of seems to make a lot of sense, and some of it makes me never want to set foot inside an academic institution again. Ever. And I hate that the book starts with this many-paged reference to "Brokeback Mountain," during the filming of which animals were maltreated, abused and killed. For the point of the book, I understand *why* the movie is referenced, but don't like it.

Oh my god, Scholtmeijer is brilliant. I've read an essay by her previously and was impressed. So far, this book is no exception. Yes, I am only on page 6, but taking notes like crazy. If this weren't so expensive I would buy my own copy and mark it up all over the place. Literate, and yes, academic, and extremely insightful. I love that she addresses the idea of animals on their own terms. Fantastic so far!

This is my favorite kind of book, except for its lack of gay stuff. (heh) Well-written, tons of atmosphere, likeable characters who are not too ahead of their time (1141), fascinating interaction between Catherine and her previously unknown Jewish relatives. And the cover's great!

So I'm not so far into the book, but I've been trying to get through it for almost two years. I think this time's a charm. It's actually really fascinating. I appreciate Karina's take on Laban. When I was in theater school, our movement teacher really focused on the Laban Technique -- had no idea he was a Nazi. Anyway, fascinating stuff. I will finish it this year!

I actually began this 2 years ago and then got involved in other stuff. It's a goal to finish all the books I've begun by the end of the year (probably won't happen), so I started re-reading this yesterday. I have really mixed feelings about it at this point, and some essays make better points than others. The intro was a real turn-off.

Mostly enjoying this, but once he brought in those two stereotypical feminists with petty thoughts my opinion of this one really plummeted. They seem like nothing more than a device for one of the characters to put them in their place. Very annoying.

Wow, this is taking me forever to get through. It's important for what it tells us about the fallacy of vivisection to find cures for human illnesses but I am not very into medical or scientific reading and this thing is boring me.
