I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read this book, but I can’t think of any story that begs to be read out loud more than this one.

I think I finally understand what “purple prose” means now.

Well that into took some wading through. Whew!

The part where Mary and Colin have a screaming match is iconic.

”Who are you?” he asked at last in a half-frightened whisper. “Are you a ghost?”

“No, I am not,” Mary answered, her own whisper sounding half frightened. “Are you one?”

”I often wonder if God recognizes His own son the way we’ve dressed him up, or is it dressed him down?”

How on earth, then, did I come to be sitting on a high Yorkshire moor in shirt sleeves and Wellingtons, smelling vaguely of cows?

This is utterly charming so far.

Wells: *goes to great pains to scientifically explain the heat ray*

Me: You mean the aliens came and started zapping us all like bugs under a magnifying glass?

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own...
