“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

“I’m so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers.”

“Do you think amethysts can be the souls of good violets?”

I think one of the reasons Ryland Grace is not a believable character is not the fact that he never shuts up (he doesn’t—like, ever), but the fact that he never appears to experience a genuine emotion. He has to cry for us to know he’s sad, there’s no other cues. He’s in a life-or-death situation and the spunky narration never changes, he just slaps some science on it and it’s fine.

“During this trial, we will show that the Project Hail Mary has over-stepped its authority in the matter of digital data acquisition and licensing. They have… a gigantic solid-state-drive array upon which they have copied literally every single piece of software that has ever been copyrighted, as well as every single book and literary work…”

Turns out nobody cares if you steal the whole internet IRL 😐

Gotta make that Goodreads goal somehow

Hi all! Just popping in to let you know that the eBook copy of What Is and Could Be is currently on sale for $1.99! This is the first time it has gone on sale since publication two years ago. If you like bookish MCs, slow-growing friendships, and alternate Victorian settings, you might want to snatch it up. Grab it here!

Chapter 1 I Am Born – “Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”

Iconic opening lines.

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read this book, but I can’t think of any story that begs to be read out loud more than this one.

… that great and singular movement of a heart that begins to love is a very obscure and a very sweet thing.

Poor old man, with a perfectly new heart!

”My child, what you are carrying is very heavy for you.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Give it to me. I will carry it for you.”

“This humble soul loved, and that was all.”

Enter: The Candlesticks

It’s been almost exactly four years since I read this the first time, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Time for round two.

If this book was marketed to treat insomnia, the makers of sleeping pills would go out of business.

The prose in this book is lyrical.

Amongst the many other deals bouncing around the Internet today is this one: you can grab a print copy of What Is and Could Be for $9.99 before the price goes up! (Or an eBook for only $0.99.) Don’t miss out!
