Started rereading from the beginning since I got half way 1-2 years ago and never finished. Love the quirky concept and the confined setting of the story to the cafe and its characters. But in the first section, Fumiko is an annoying twit and it’s detracting for me.

I was enjoying’ this as an interesting memoir, until I stumbled on allegations of Paris having made significant racist and homophobic remarks in the past. So I googled. And yeah, i don’t know how I’ll go continuing her memoir - especially as an audio book which she narrates. I am interested in her experience at the controversial boarding school so I will likely continue to hear her experience there. Hmmph

Just found this interesting collection for Free on Apple Books app Audible.

Published 1910 it is apparently a Holmes style series of crime mysteries featuring female detective Lady Molly.

Honestly don’t know what I think at this point. I’m a little aware of Cunk on tv and the style / genre. But .. this reads like a random stream of consciousness jumping from one random topic to next in a few sentences; and it is largely ludicrous either way occasionally amusing but ridiculous comment on people or society. Not sure I’ll finish it … we’ll see.

I’m only a little way in but have to stop by here and say thus far, this book is great, thought provoking and recommended. It takes a different approach, is clearly written/narrated, and reevaluates some things like the notion of self care and the wellness industry; that such business industries and SELF care are actually problematic in how to live your life well. Anyway, I recommend it so far!

I’m up to the ‘controversial’ chapter ‘Go Hitler!’ that many reviewers here have condemned. The chapter that is about his childhood friend who was actually really named Hitler.

Don’t want to add spoilers but

I actually am not offended. While it IS a jarring as a western white history teacher…. taking in what Noah says around this, the sociopolitical context, it’s actually very eye opening.

I like Mel’s approach , especially her TED talks. This concept is good and a few chapters in she has me convinced it’s psychologically and scientifically a valid habit to develop. Clearly written, researched and substantiated. I just don’t know if I’ll finish it - my aversion to self help books is strong - and I don’t know if I can commit to a whole book on this…

Sigh. Struggling.

I think my issue of disinterest and disengagement is that I don’t know what this is?

It doesn’t have a plot because it’s a history book, but it’s not really a history book because it creates fictional ‘ancient Egyptians’ lives, thoughts, actions and dialogue. So what is it?!
I’m clearly not the target audience. This is aimed at non academics and or novices to AE.

Whilst listening to the audiobook which I’m enjoying btw, I’m also perusing peoples goodreads reviews.
Amused and 🙄 at the people downrating it because they ‘don’t care’ about Greens ‘musings’ and personal thoughts - even though this is advertised/blurbed as personal essays of Green.
Like really people?
LOL

Personally am enjoying the tangentially random musings about humanity and our foibles.

We probably didn’t know what we were doing thousands of years go as we hunted some large mammals to extinction but we know what we’re doing now. We know how to tread more lightly on the earth. We could choose to use less energy, eat less meat, clear fewer forests and we choose not to. As a result, for many forms of life, humanity IS the apocalypse.

It’s interesting in parts, but hard to maintain interest to finish.

It’s set out as stories and anecdotes of parts of her life from childhood to adulthood that don’t necessarily connect in a thread, and this easy to put down and forget.

I’m not sure if I’ll finish this , but if I do it might be in a year or this time as I dip in and out.
