I need to deep dive the different versions of the text. My copy includes an author introduction from 1831 in which Shelley says she cleaned up the style a little bit. Matt's edition must be the original 1818 version. Or a completely different one? Right off the bat, his has Robert Walton pondering the mysteries of magnets! But mine cut the line about magnets! I was excited to read this. But dude. He immediately denies any relation bewteen his characters and the "slutty" (his word) sister and then I had to sit through this meandering description of women who are all either whores or mothers. He describes Camus' writing of maman's funeral as "he is trying to construct a fable, not a reportage." My margin notes of that scene say "c'est plus un reportage qu'un roman."
