Excellent copy of the Catasterisms. The introduction is thorough, probably the best that’s been published in English.

It’s possibly just the dearth of info that has survived . . . but I find myself deeply lamenting the loss of Numenius’ writings. Particularly those writings dealing with the nature and fate of the soul.

Philo of Alexandria and Plutarch are now behind us . . . now we’re moving into uncharted territory

This book is really a phenomenal study. The authors command of his subject is broad and penetrating and the history of thought that he’s exploring is the fulcrum on which the ancient world spilled over into the new! Really can not recommend this one enough.

Such a seminal study. This is my second read through, and with a broader understanding of the whole Platonic worldview now under my belt, what was once mysterious and cryptic in this work, is now illuminating a whole world of interrelated studies.

Not that I’ve read a lot, but so far this is the best info on Mesopotamian cosmology and myth I’ve been able to find. No interpretation on the part of the author, just history and context of the texts used.

Intriguing study so far. The author is very conservative with his evidence, which is both refreshing and frustrating at the same time. But his initial development of the Greek concept of the underworld is thorough and fascinating.

Wasn’t sure about this one in chapters one and two. I struggle with these philological and comparative literary studies sometimes, they just seem too subjective. But now that Gee is into the meat of her thesis, and has found her stride, she is making a believer out of me.

I’m glad I did the footwork of reading the earlier 20th century explorations of this subject first. At least read Dodds’ “The Greeks and the Irrational” before coming to Bremmer, as this work is a direct commentary and refutation of this earlier work as well as several other influential articles given in the bibliography.

Seriously, this is a really good book. I read a lot of historical non-fiction related to the Great Work, and it's rare that a work can provide both a new view on a familiar history, as well as some powerful contributions to operative magick. This is also the only work I've encountered so far that gives a good introduction and analysis of the works of Kunrath, so . . . highly recommended so far!

-and only $200!

Haven’t read Nietsche in years, picking it up now to fill an important gap by reading The Birth of Tragedy, a work I neglected when I first approached his work. Kaufman’s translations are the best, and I’m really looking forward to this one.
