Chapter 2 was even worse than chapter 1. DNF.

I really don’t want to give up on this one, but between the purring/growling of the MMC, repetitive descriptions (so MANY oak trees), and sloppy dialogue that is just plain confusing, I don’t have much hope.

Sure wish Case wanted to be the main character

I wish some of these moments were given time to breathe. Feels like we’re just swept along from set piece to set piece without getting any introspection on how Case feels about things that happen.

This prose is GORGEOUS but I don’t do “sad people having affairs”. DNF

This has been less 101 Dalmatians and more Sheep Pig/Babe. These sheep are extremely passive investigators, with most of the story progressing through accidentally overheard conversations. Their inconsistent ignorance (they understand cars but are flabbergasted by a necklace?) is really frustrating…I may not finish this one.

In an age of “second screen”-conscious scripts and “three clues” novels, it’s refreshing to read something that throws you in the deep end with just enough context for you to piece some of it together.

Overworked and underpaid magic professor gets tangled up with Russian gangsters and, exhausted, starts making little mistakes that snowball into a big problem?

HELL YES. Big Peter Parker energy and I’m loving it.

Comments on the proper title for a modern wizard - practitioner? Doctor (PhD in Necromancy, after all)? Love it. This is why I read urban fantasy!
