This is the kind of book that makes you realize maybe you’re already too old to be spending your precious free time on some dumbass porns. There are good porns out there, this one is plain traaaash.

A heartbroken and exhausted intellectual feeling himself everyday slowly losing his dignity and humanity in a degenerating police state. Resembling Orwell's novels in many ways in its cynicism, but with a half insane-half sober philosophical tone, and shit loads of disgusting but metaphorical scenes. I felt sick to the stomach more than once only after 60 pages, but that's how I should be feeling. Super interesting.

An old ass white man lamenting that social history which no longer pays utmost attention to "great white men" and political decision making processes is killing Canada's national history ie. White men's history, which to him is the core knowledge that every Canadian must know, especially the newcomer immigrants. Real piece of shit but still hafta read this to write a review 💀

the Sino-Soviet relationship reflected in fashion trends and competitive spirit in the fofm of consumerist culture. Super refreshing approach to a topic that has hitherto been predominantly analyzed in terms of "big" politics.

Consumerism in China today is not simply a counterreaction to half a century of communist suppression of capitalist manifestations but can actually be seen as another stage of the consumerist culture accumulated well accross and deeply ingrained in the social fabric of the Maoist era. The part abt the Three Goods of wristwatch, bicycle, and sewing machine as symbols of social status was hella interesting.

Just finished listening to the podcast that introduced this book. Love the concept of the book. Lotsa people who have never truly experienced living in overt authoritarian "communist" regimes may assume that the "building communism" there was/is as orthodox and followed strictly the words of Marx or Lenin or Mao or whoever. Well, things weren't so simple for sure. Can't w8 to finish this book.

Damn Rokusei Mitsumi did it again. A darn wholesome book. Imma write a review later when I have time.

Somebody did some proper research on the Occupation and did a great job incorporating in the story some of MacArthur's strategy in demolishing State Shinto here lol. Legitly feel like I'm losing my integrity right now cuz I'll prolly give this book a 5 stars right after I rated another book from the same author a 5 stars 😂

Started reading this just cuz I was bored of my current BL but holy shit is this book interesting. The language is old-fashioned af but the writing style is so my taste. Sometimes sarcastic, sometimes compassionate and endearing, sometimes philosophical, sometimes outrageous. Man I just really love 19th to early 20th century Russian literatures, always full of salt and with an engaging and gut-wrenching storytelling

Man do I hate characters who put の at the end of their questions. Are they trying to be burikko or what. Gahhh

I like how the MC did a self-analysis after being "dumped" n realized he tended to become emotionally dependent on others because he was empty inside, but that could not go on since it made him feel helpless n vulnerable all the time. He needed to fill himself up with knowledge etc. so that he could stand on his own feet. Yep, you're on the right track, do your best kid !

Surprisingly good. Thought it was another bullshit BL with an annoying af top again but turned out Mr. Condescending actually came to realize that his mindset then was ruining the rela and decided to change his approach. Good for him man.
The bottom was a much more interesting character than ppl on jpn review site gave him credit for.
Hope the story maintains its current quality til the end.

Ok if Patroclus dies cuz of Achilles's stupid pride just like how Kircheis died cuz of Reinhard's pride n Achilles keeps his better half's dead body in his tent just like how Reinhard kept Kircheis' frozen dead body in his private room then I literally am digging my own grave right now

Patroclus is the sweetest child. Reminds me even more of Kircheis, and I'm not ready for THAT yet plz don't come so soon 😭😭😭

So far soooo good, this author's writing style is totally my cup of tea. And the narrator's voice and interpretation is just waaaay too spot on I can't help but got immersed into the story immediately. The two MCs reminded me of Reinhard and Kircheis from Gineiden, A LOT.

Was listening to the audiobook while on the train. Kept me awake as well as away from motion sickness cuz of how crazy accurate the book's description of the BB dictatorship is as compared to my living experience. Not a nice feeling tho 🙃

A 15-year-old kid and a 30-year-old man, and surprisingly the story doesn't piss me off. Pretty interesting for a book that I had very low expectation for at first.

Gradually getting impatient with this couple. I enjoy slice-of-life atmosphere and detailed portrayal of emotions but maaaaan taking more than 10 years to get back together is tbh not a topic I'm really interested in 😩😩😩

So far pretty good. Common "romantic" tropes in BL like the top thinking "I wanna protect you", liking the bottom's cooking so much etc. ironically (or not) become the reason for the breakup. No matter how much they say they love you and need you, when they project their vision of you onto you, expecting you to fit perfectly into that mold, "when it's all abt themselves, then their love in the end is just egoistical"

Fantastic read so far. I'm already familiar with the basic arguments but the way the author articulated and expanded their ideas is just so clear, coherent, and persuasive that I can honestly say I'm having fun reading this book. Can really see myself building a research framework for my grad thesis based on the book's line of arguments.

Detailed analysis on the trade-offs among different social and political groups. The author challenged the black-&-white assumption of a monolithic state and its cronies vs. opposition groups. Relationships among groups were much more complicated and should be understood in terms of interest group dynamism. Love all of those bootleggers-&-baptists moments in the book, shows how ppl were acting pretty strategically

Book didn’t jump straight into discussing the moral suasion (教化) process during the imperial era, but started from the Tokugawa era, with very detailed explanations about how this system affected the social/cultural landscape, how it benefited (in concrete terms) the ruling class, and how it laid the foundation for the thinking and policy making after the Meiji Restoration. I really like this approach.
