The truthful answer is that we don't know where did the idea of the soul come from. what seems clear, however, is that belief in the soul maybe humanity's first belief, if the cognitive theory of religion is correct, belief in the soul is what led to believe in God. the origin of the religious impulse, in other words, is not rooted to our quest for meaning or our fear of the unknown.

What remains undeniable is that religious belief is so wide-spread that it must be considered an elemental part of the human experience. We are homo religious, not in our desire for creeds or institutions, nor in our commitments to specific gods and theologies, but in our existential striving toward transcendence: toward that which lies beyond the manifest world.

in the two years since I left Egypt, things haven't gotten better. Thousand of people have been incarcerated for the most trivial reasons. Hundreds have been tortured on daily basis in police stations, others have been killed!

It was a mystery to me how hate, fear and absolute infatuation could coexist. Then I read this passage from George Orwell, 1984 that explained why members of the Party were allowed to get married only when the Party had proof that there was absolutely no sexual attraction between the couple involved;

And that was the core of the problem, the army was indeed much more sacred than the religion, and was not allowed to be slandered in any way!
Islam might have entered Egypt fifteen hundred years ago, but for seven thousand years before that Egypt was owned by an army!
