Sittenfeld showed up on my college friend's social media post recently. Apparently, she's now divorced and living in Minneapolis. Anyway, I picked up Prep believing that this was a solid second read of a moderately enjoyable novel. I needed a predictable narrative. Guess what? I was confusing it with Commencement by Courtney Sullivan. Now, I am obligated to finish this book.

"The Forester's Daughter" reminds me of my favorite seminar at the neighboring women's college. Everyone was a senior except me. We spent all the classroom hours discussing fairy tales and folktales. Feminism with retribution and justice.

The titular story "Walk the Blue Fields" demonstrates why non-East Asian authors cannot write about our eyes. I rolled my eyes (literally) when Keegan describes the Asian male.

Galloway brings up well known statistics comparing male versus female human capital investment and loneliness. He feels that his two sons need to protect, provide, procreate. This is where his book is vastly inferior to Orenstein's Boys and Sex.

He continues to state his demographics (white/straight male). It's abundantly clear that he's not close to men of color.

Although he's not Andrew Tate, Galloway has earned all of the hesitant reviews and allusions to the manosphere.

It's strange because reading Notes on Being a Man gives me the same level of frustration I felt when reading Kara Swisher.

Kimberlé Crenshaw and Cathy Park Hong come to mind as books I'd like these two Pivot podcasters to read.

Why did I start reading Scott Galloway's book? Peggy Orenstein's Boys and Sex is clearly the superior book. His latest video commentary from Davos was worst kind of Boomer humblebrag.

I am reading his book because my mentees are all men in the tech field. During my first years of college (and working), I used to dream about being a mentor to women. Plot twist. That's not my fate (at least for now).

Starting Bunny during the first year that I experienced tangible benefits of my single gender educational institution seems way too fitting for 2025. Eagerly anticipating the strange female rituals that come from the Awad's Bunnies.

During the 2016 election, feminist Gloria Steinem said that women voted for Bernie Sanders in order to meet men. This feminist icon was misreading Late Stage Capitalism voters. Judith Butler, who almost started gender theory (according to some scholars), seems to be making the same mistake. There's a time when iconic leaders must pass the baton.

Butler's history of outright attacks against marriage for LGBTQ+ is powerful. During that key chapter, I received a text message from a college alumna contact sharing that she and her wife are expecting twin girls. The attempts of the Catholic Church and government agencies to delegitimize families hit extra hard. Minor critique. It's very Judeo-Christian focused,

Somewhere in a world that didn’t quite end, a woman like me is foraging for that which failed to kill her. <- This sentence is from Choi’s powerful napalm poem where Korean War refugees use partially detonated canisters as cooking fuel.

The constant onslaught of homophobic and transphobic laws is depressing. It's a chilling reminder that gender bias is correlated (often) with other forms of bigotry.

During my 1st college semester, I was surrounded by literature and women's studies majors. The syllabi from these classes were everywhere. After completing midterms, I would read these course books for fun. That's when I knew that none of these subjects would be my major. Books focused on these topics would fill my entire adult life. Do Women's Studies majors spend years reading my selected topic? Doubtful.

What’s the point of grieving in the future tense? This anxiety inducing inquiry occupied evening childhood dreams for years. Adult perspective made me feel what Choi calls anticipatory feelings towards the past. It becomes akin to möbius strip like narrative.

My parents shared the Nancherla family approach to introversion. This is why I was enrolled in a season of soccer.

I love her adult reaction to the INFJ categorization (and valid debunking regarding MBTI's accuracy). When my college career services shared my results, they said, "Don't worry. This profile is only rare in the US. There's an abundance of your profile type found on other continents."

Koul explores racism, class, and colorism. She and her family face racism in the US while being lighter and caste privileged in India. Her niece Raisin is viewed by the family and others as extra beautiful due to her white mother.

Her father's response and confusion to the DEI editorial tweet about diverse writers was heartbreaking. Kudos to her for discussing trans, nonbinary, and racial representation.

I always start Indian autobiographies thinking about the vast differences between South and East Asians.

That's a distinction that's reinforced professionally and personally. Exhibit A: My Punjabi friend forwards me an article explaining why East Asians have less financial success (relatively speaking).

Actually reading the autobiographical inevitably shows me the many eerie and comforting similarities.

Her prick to productivity ratio is well intentioned. She acknowledged her self appointed role as judge and jury. I think this faulty KPI illustrates her privileged myopia. Jobs’ proclivity to take handicapped parking spots is ableist. Small Fry should lower his standing. Plus, she unevenly holds tech billionaires responsible for their personal lives. How can she give him a pass just because he’s brilliant?
