people in the western world are more comfortable saying no, they don't have the bandwidth to do something. Vietnamese people will often times say yes to things out of politeness, but whether or not they will do it or enjoy it or not is a whole different story.

not a lot of emphasis on the arts in education. arts not necessarily mean u will be an artist, but more on appreciating beauty, learning how to dress yourself or coordinate colors in regular life. when u try to experiment arts in your own life, u're perceived as vain and frivolous

culture is obsessed with achievement and will bend rules to achieve. contrast with prior generations get lower grades/higher standards but they turn out fine. nowadays we see higher grades but social culture is in decline. valid

pervasive casual violence. defending children arbitrarily instead of correcting their behavior in public (i feel like this totally depends)

even when you do good deeds for other people, you still have to like treat them with respect. A really good analogy for this is when you get married, you take each other for granted because you think, caring for each other in a relationship is a justified guaranteed, when it actually takes work and every day constantly having to do the work

lack of accountability when they make mistakes. theres also a culture of if u give gifts, it has to be up to certain monetary standards. small gestures are a thing of the past.

viet people externally are humble, but they are prideful, regardless of how low or high their social standing is. they can give up jobs and relationships over hits to their pride. can confirm correct

Duong interesting analogy of how reading rates for detective or murder mystery is not high in Vietnam compared to other countries. This might be because we don't necessarily enjoy reading things that involve a lot of laws and logic. That stems from a culture of whatever you do some thing, if not 50%, it's 90% out of goodwill for other people instead of subjectivity or logic.

Duong I really enjoy how she's able to observe and put into words of the specific behavioral phenomenon. However, these are only kind of observations. There isn't a deep dive in the cultural causes and impacts. Feels a little surface level when this could turn out to be something incredibly multifaceted.

Duong we're finally touching on how this impacts equality and equity. Like in a competition, the definition of fair would vary between different judges. Some judges would think fair is giving the prizes to the contestants that are most capable. Some judges would think fair is giving the prices to all contestants so that everybody has their own time in the spotlight instead of focusing on just a few individuals for a really long time. Reminds me of diversity, inclusion, and equity effort in the ongoing debate in the US. Equality or equity?

Duong there's also kind of the social understanding of doing things out of Goodwill. It is almost ingrained in the expectations of norms. Like people would totally understand if they don't get certain things because other people have goodwill privilege. For example, like if you go to a hospital, even though you're waiting in line for a really long time to go see a doctor, you would totally understand if a nepo baby comes in before you because they have a connection with somebody higher up in the hospital.

Duong also talks about impulsiveness of people to judge and comment as soon as they receive information instead of waiting for the full story or being able to debate and offer criticism constructively.
